Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe
European Jewish Heritage grants
Grants for not-for-profit institutions across Europe, including the UK, that hold archives, libraries, books, records or objects relating to Jewish history, heritage and culture. The two routes open now accept applications all year: Scoping Grants of up to £5,000 pay for an independent consultant to survey a little-understood collection and write a report, and Expert/Consultant Visits of up to £2,000 pay for an expert to visit and advise on things such as cataloguing, digitisation, conservation, exhibitions or education. The larger Collections Management, Exhibition Support and Digital Heritage Projects grants are a two-stage annual round that is closed for 2026 and is due to reopen in January 2027.

Who can apply
- Any organisation based in Europe, in EU and non-EU states alike, except Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, whose activities run on a not-for-profit basis and that can prove it
- UK applicants need charitable status under UK charity law; international applicants must be non-profit entities under their local rules
- The Foundation names museums, universities, public, private and institutional libraries and archives, heritage organisations, cultural institutions and other professional organisations that have acquired a collection
- The organisation must hold material relating to Jewish history, heritage or culture, and the application must come from the organisation, not an individual
- An organisation still obtaining charitable or not-for-profit status will not be paid until it is confirmed, and the grant is cancelled if that status is not secured within three months of the award notification
What it funds
- Scoping Grant (up to £5,000): consultant fees and reasonable expenses for an independent consultant to survey all or part of a collection related to Jewish history, heritage or culture and produce a report on its current status, condition, size, provenance and significance with recommendations for next steps; basic packaging to keep material safe in the short term can be included. It can be a preliminary step towards a larger project application.
- Expert/Consultant Visit (up to £2,000): fees and reasonable expenses for an external expert to visit the institution and produce a report, advising on managing the Jewish material held or giving strategic advice about it (for example cataloguing, digitisation, conservation, exhibition design or educational programming)
The annual (currently closed) categories cover collections management, exhibition development and digital heritage projects.
What it will not fund
- Activities that have already happened, or that are scheduled to happen while the application is being considered
- Organisations based in Ukraine, Russia or Belarus
- Organisations that do not operate on a not-for-profit basis
Collections Management, Exhibition Support and Digital Heritage Projects grants are closed until January 2027; only Scoping Grants and Expert/Consultant Visits can be applied for now
