The Salford Trust
The Salford Trust Main Award
Grants of up to £500 help young people aged 5 to 25 who live in the City of Salford take up an activity, hobby, sport or skill that they could not otherwise afford. The award is for individuals, not groups. The money goes straight to the provider of the activity or equipment, not to the family. You can apply at any time of year. A committee looks at applications in three funding rounds a year, and anything time-critical is reviewed between rounds.

- The application can be completed by the young person, by a parent or guardian, or by a referee such as a teacher, support worker or mentor
- Referees should involve the young person and, where possible, a parent or guardian
- Organisations and groups cannot apply for their own benefit
What it funds
- Anything that helps a child or young person learn, develop new skills, or take part in a character-building experience or activity
- Past awards have covered sports and hobbies, equipment or kit, music and performing arts, and short training courses that improve job prospects or skills
- Apprenticeship equipment is considered only for young people who are solely responsible for dependants, young carers, or young people living on their own
- Up to £500 is the normal limit
- Higher amounts may be considered in exceptional circumstances
What it will not fund
- Childcare costs
- Course fees for school, college or university, and associated general living expenses
- School resources such as electronic devices
- Driving lessons and associated items such as insurance and licences
- Living expenses
- Membership fees such as gym passes
- Remedial interventions such as speech, language or occupational therapy
- Retrospective funding for something that has already happened
- Standard school, college or sporting group trips
- Opportunities with a political or religious focus
- Anything that should be financed by statutory services
- Opportunities that benefit a group, such as a school or youth club, rather than an individual
residential excursions are not normally considered, but the Trust may consider cases that are unique to the individual
the Trust says this list is not exhaustive and that it reviews its criteria quarterly
How to apply
- Check that the young person meets the age, Salford residency and financial-need criteria
- Complete the online application form linked from the Apply Now button on the website, giving as much detail as possible about the opportunity and the difference the funding would make
- The committee reviews the application at the next of its three annual funding rounds and decides what level of support to offer
applications are accepted all year, and time-critical requests are reviewed between rounds
if you find written forms difficult, you can film or record yourself answering the questions, and a volunteer can help with the form (call 07392 621224 or email mail@salfordtrust.co.uk)
successful awards are paid directly to the provider of the service or equipment
