The Anchor Foundation

The Anchor Foundation

The Anchor Foundation gives grants of up to £12,000 to Christian charities concerned with social inclusion, particularly through ministries of healing and the arts. It deliberately targets Christian charities because they may find it harder to get funding from secular grant-givers, and it will consider projects in the UK or overseas. Trustees meet twice a year (usually April and October), and the first stage is a short online form of no more than about two A4 sides.

Who can apply

  • Christian charities with a registered charity number (the form asks for it and asks the applicant to explain in what way the organisation is Christian)
  • CICs and individuals cannot apply
  • Projects can be located in the UK or overseas
  • No income limit is published
  • Charities running several projects must pick one
  • Applicants, successful or not, must wait at least 15 months after their previous application before applying again, and projects that have had 3 consecutive years of funding must wait 2 years from the last award
  • The form also asks whether the organisation has recent accounts that have been audited or independently examined

What it funds

A single project run by a Christian charity whose work involves:

  • The arts
  • Healing (a healing ministry 'in the wider sense of the word')
  • Social inclusion

The application form asks which of these three categories the project falls into and why.

Projects may be in the UK or overseas.

Requests can cover more than one year (the form asks for the total).

Building work is funded only in exceptional circumstances.

The Trustees look favourably on organisations whose Boards demonstrate equal opportunities.

What it will not fund

  • Organisations that are not Christian charities
  • Community Interest Companies (CICs)
  • Individuals
  • Purchase of land or buildings
  • Building work, except in exceptional circumstances
  • More than one project per application (charities running several projects must choose one)
  • Applicants who applied within the previous 15 months, whether successful or not
  • Projects that have had 3 consecutive years of funding, until 2 years after the last grant award

How to apply

  1. Read the Information for Applicants page
  2. Complete the online Application Form on the Foundation's website (charity details, how the organisation is Christian, which categories the project falls into (Arts, Healing, Social Inclusion), amount requested up to £12,000, project location, what the funding is for, who benefits, previous applications and grants, other funding received or sought, and whether accounts are audited or independently examined); keep answers brief, no more than about 2 A4 sides in total
  3. Submit by 31 January (for the April Trustees' meeting) or 31 July (for the October meeting); do not wait until the end of the period, as this will not increase your chances
  4. You will receive a copy of your application by email as confirmation of submission (this is not automatic, so will not be immediate)
  5. If shortlisted, you will be contacted and asked for further information such as a project budget and annual accounts
  6. Successful applicants are contacted after the Trustees' meeting, usually by the end of May or end of November

If online completion is not possible, the offline PDF form can be printed, completed and emailed to secretary@theanchorfoundation.org.uk. Do not send applications to the registered office address.

Do not include any other information at the first stage; it will not be considered. Incorrect, invalid or incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Foundation cannot respond to all applicants or give feedback; if you have not heard by the timescales above, your application has been unsuccessful.

Grant recipients must provide a report on the use of the funding 12 months after receiving the grant, using the Project Report form.

Have ready
