Bradford Council (Bradford East Area Co-ordinator's Office)

Bradford East Community Chest

Small one-off grants, normally up to £500 per project, from Bradford Council's Bradford East Area Co-ordinator's Office for community-based leisure and cultural activities that could not go ahead without financial help. Open to non-profit voluntary groups with open membership that are based in, or benefit people living in, the Bradford East Constituency area. New groups are positively encouraged, and special consideration is given to the elderly, disabled people, youth, ethnic minorities, unemployed people and communities such as inner city areas and housing estates. Who can apply

  • Non-profit making voluntary groups/organisations where membership is open (no discrimination on grounds of sex, race, religion, occupation or opinion), that are based in, or benefit people who live in, the Bradford East Constituency area (the form lists the wards Bolton & Undercliffe, Eccleshill, Bowling & Barkerend, Idle & Thackley, Bradford Moor and Little Horton)
  • New or previously unfunded groups are positively encouraged
  • The office favours organisations that make every effort to be self-supporting
  • Groups should normally expect only one grant per financial year, and receiving funding in consecutive years does not guarantee continued funding
  • Any previous grant must have been fully accounted for with receipts/accounts and a short report

What it funds

  • Community-based leisure/cultural activities which will be of benefit to the community, where the activity could not go ahead without financial assistance
  • Grants are normally one-off and can cover capital or revenue expenditure
  • Youth groups (including youth sports groups) are eligible
  • Grants may complement other sources of funding
  • Special consideration for target groups including the elderly, disabled, youth, ethnic minorities, unemployed, particular communities (e.g. inner city areas, housing estates), new starts and innovatory schemes

What it will not fund

  • Adult sports clubs or groups
  • Religious or political activities, or capital expenditure exclusively connected with such activities
  • Retrospective funding: any spending, event or service that takes place before you receive confirmation that your application has been approved
  • Fundraising for a secondary body (not normally, unless within the terms of a loss guarantee)
  • Organisations whose membership is not open (discrimination on grounds of sex, race, religion, occupation or opinion)
  • Groups that have not fully accounted for a previous grant

How to apply

  1. Read the notes for applicants and criteria, and contact the team to confirm the date of the next grant allocation panel if unclear (your activity must take place after approval)
  2. Download and complete the Community Chest application form (Word document) on the page, typed or clearly written in black ink, preferably in block capitals, giving full project information and a detailed budget of expenditure and income
  3. Attach the supporting documents
  4. Return by email to bradfordeastinformation@bradford.gov.uk or by post to Bradford East Area Co-ordinator's Office, Laisterdyke Hub, Manse Street, Bradford BD3 8RP, before the end of May, August, October or January

Applications received after a closing date are considered at the next available meeting.

Successful groups must account for the money in full (copies of accounts and/or receipts) and submit a short report on the project.

Have ready

  • Completed Community Chest application form, signed
  • Your organisation's constitution or rules
  • Latest audited accounts or bank statements
  • Two quotations from independent suppliers for the expenditure listed
  • Postcodes of users/volunteers involved
  • Programme of the event, if available

The notes say the constitution/rules are needed if this is the first application or the constitution has changed since you last applied, and an independent audited financial statement 'where appropriate'; the form's checklist asks for all of the above.
