The Walter Farthing Trust

The Walter Farthing Trust Grants

Small grants, typically up to £5,000, from an independent Chelmsford-based trust for charitable and not-for-profit organisations benefiting people in Mid-Essex (Chelmsford, Maldon and Braintree council areas). The trust mainly funds specific projects rather than general running costs, and likes to support charities with lower incomes. A Grant Panel of trustees decides twice a year.

Who can apply

  • Charitable and not-for-profit organisations within Mid-Essex (the Chelmsford, Maldon and Braintree council areas)
  • The trust likes to support charities with lower incomes but publishes no income limit
  • National or international charities are funded only if the money will be spent within the local area and make a difference to the Mid-Essex community

What it funds

  • Mainly specific projects rather than the general running costs of an organisation
  • The application form lets you choose:
  • Operating support
  • Capital
  • Project
  • Emergency
  • Other

Past grants have gone to a dementia charity, a foodbank, a charity providing computers for disabled people, a sight-loss charity, a youth centre, a school music association, a nurses' support charity, a local rape and abuse support charity and a local hospice.

What it will not fund

  • General running costs are funded less often, since the trust mainly funds specific projects
  • National or international charities, unless the funds will be spent within the Mid-Essex area
