Relief in Need Group Grants
Grants of £500 to £5,000 for registered charities and voluntary organisations whose work directly relieves financial (or, under the District Nursing Fund, medical) need among residents of the City of Manchester, with the District Nursing Fund also covering Salford and Trafford. One application form covers all three trust funds, and trustees prefer grassroots organisations. Applications are considered monthly throughout the year. The charity also makes grants to individuals and families, but only through referring professionals.

Who can apply
- Registered charities and voluntary organisations, with a preference for grassroots organisations
- Under Manchester Relief in Need, the organisation must help residents of the 32 wards of the City of Manchester who are in financial need
- Under the Manchester District Nursing Fund (which includes the Levenshulme Trust for the Relief of Sickness and Suffering), it may help residents of Manchester (32 wards), Salford (20 wards) or Trafford (21 wards) who are in financial need and have a medical condition, or are recovering from one, that affects their ability to provide the items requested for themselves
- The FAQ adds that an M postcode or a Manchester postal address does not prove someone lives in the City of Manchester, and asks applicants to check beneficiaries' postcodes with the GOV.UK local council checker
- The form asks about registered charity status, safeguarding policy and incidents, a management committee, a written constitution and a bank account with two or more signatories
- Only one application per organisation is considered in any 12-month period, and an application to one fund counts as an application to all three
What it funds
- A specific project or piece of work that the organisation delivers as part of its overall service and that directly benefits people in need
- Trustees are flexible about what they fund, but the need must be specific and the grant must help to relieve the beneficiaries' suffering, whether financial or medical
- A temporary or fixed-term post, or extra hours for existing staff, can be considered if it is needed to deliver a specific part of the project, though there is no guarantee of future funding
- Trustees will consider a reasonable proportion of administrative or central support costs
- Projects should be delivered within 12 months of the award
- Past grants have paid for food pantry supplies, Christmas activities for young people in supported housing, baby starter packs and emergency crisis support
What it will not fund
- Organisations based outside the fund areas (City of Manchester; Salford and Trafford only under the District Nursing Fund)
- Requests only for general everyday running costs such as existing salaries, heating, lighting or rates
- Applications that help only one individual (use the individual referral form instead)
- Applications only for staffing and administrative costs
- Larger appeals such as major building renovations (not generally funded)
- Retrospective funding
- Continuation funding (not normally considered)
- Grants over £5,000, except in exceptional circumstances
- Requests for cash
- Taxes, fines or other payments to public funds
- Flooring (currently paused)
How to apply
- Read the Group Grant Guidelines (revised June 2026)
- Check with the GOV.UK local council checker that the beneficiaries live within the eligible council area
- Complete every section of the online organisation application form at https://www.reliefinneed.co.uk/organisation-form (purpose, request for grant, service statistics, cost breakdown, funding, governance questions and signatures), and give a reason for any section you cannot complete
- Upload your accounts and supporting documents with the form
- Submit by the 15th of the month (11th in December) to be considered at the next trustee meeting
- Trustees meet on the last Friday of every month except December and decide
Group applications are accepted only through the online form, and an application to one fund is an application to all three
Awards are paid only in the organisation's full legal name. Receipts may be requested, and trustees may ask to visit
Individuals and families cannot apply directly. A professional must refer them through the separate individual form (grants generally up to £500)
Have ready
- Completed online organisation application form, signed by two people (Trustee/CEO and Trustee/Secretary)
- Income and expenditure statement and balance sheet accounts for the last two years
- Copies of estimates for any specific items of equipment
- Supplementary sheets or other supporting information (optional)
A repeat applicant must also include a feedback report of no more than three sides of A4 on how the previous grant was used
