The Old Enfield Charitable Trust (The Trust Enfield)

Community Grants

Community Grants from The Old Enfield Charitable Trust, a 500-year-old local charity (no. 207840) that also runs Enfield Market, for community and grassroots projects benefiting residents of the EN1, EN2 and EN3 postcodes in the London Borough of Enfield. It funds work with children, older people, health promotion, homelessness/poverty, arts and culture, the environment and active lifestyles, and prefers capital items or a contribution to a specific event or project. The Trust pays suppliers directly rather than handing over cash, and the grant must be spent within six months. The Trust gives around £250K a year in total across personal, educational and community grants.

Who can apply

  • Registered charities, CICs and community groups (local community, self-help and voluntary groups) that live or operate within the Old Enfield Charitable Trust's boundaries and serve mainly its client population: the EN1, EN2 and EN3 postcodes of the London Borough of Enfield, broadly the ancient parish of Enfield (a boundary map is published)
  • The form also mentions individuals acting for the wider benefit of the local community
  • The form asks what percentage of your clients live in the Ancient Parish of Enfield, and groups based outside the area must serve it 'in large part'
  • There is no stated income limit, but you must give your annual income and expenditure, number of paid staff and income sources, and enclose your latest accounts
  • Bodies whose premises and activities are normally government-funded (e.g. schools, hospitals) and overseas charities are excluded, and religious bodies are funded only for open, community-wide activity
  • Each organisation can have one application per calendar year

What it funds

Community and grassroots projects in the Trust's area (EN1, EN2 and EN3, London Borough of Enfield) that benefit local residents, improve quality of life and promote community cohesion, and/or support local initiatives to relieve poverty and hardship. Priority categories are:

  • Children (appropriate activities, healthy lifestyles, e.g. healthy eating, sport and extra-curricular activities)
  • Older people (activities, healthy and active lifestyles, tackling social isolation)
  • Health promotion (healthy eating, active lifestyle, psychological and emotional well-being), especially for disadvantaged and disabled groups
  • Homelessness and poverty (people affected by homelessness, poverty and poor housing)
  • Arts and culture (e.g. community music festivals and other community arts projects)
  • Environment (a clean and healthy environment)
  • Active lifestyles (exercise, fitness, sport)

Grants are more likely for capital items or as a contribution to a specific event or project.

Part-funding is common.

What it will not fund

  • Salaries or ongoing expenses (not normally funded); ongoing running costs of established projects
  • Work whose premises and activities are normally funded by local or national government departments, e.g. hospitals and schools
  • Groups that use their surplus for the benefit of an individual or business
  • Overseas charities
  • Fundraising for political parties / party political activity
  • Religious bodies, unless there is a wider benefit to the local community and the activity is open to all
  • More than one application for the same event, or more than one application per organisation, in a calendar year

Only part of the amount requested may be awarded, and you must say how the rest will be funded. The award is final and is not increased for overspends. Unspent grants are withdrawn after six months, and misused grants may have to be repaid
