Three Rivers District Council

Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants of up to £30,000 help disabled residents of Three Rivers adapt their home so they can live independently, for example ramps, stairlifts or hoists, or an adapted bathroom and toilet. This is a grant for individuals (owners or tenants), not organisations, and a financial assessment sets the amount, so you may have to pay part of the cost. Grants over £5,000 may have to be repaid if you move or sell within 10 years.

Who can apply

  • Individuals living in the Three Rivers District Council area where you or someone living in the property is disabled
  • You, or the person you are applying for, must own the property or be a tenant who plans to live there for the five-year grant period
  • The adaptation must be necessary and appropriate to meet the person's needs and reasonable and appropriate for the home
  • Tenants need formal permission from their landlord
  • Not open to organisations

What it funds

Home improvements and adaptations so a disabled person can live independently in their home, such as:

  • Putting in a ramp or half steps to improve access
  • Adding a hoist or stairlift
  • Installing an adapted bathroom and toilet

What it will not fund

  • Works that are currently in progress or already complete (you must apply before starting work)
  • Adaptations that are not necessary and appropriate to the disabled person's needs
  • Adaptations that are not reasonable and practical for the property's age, layout and condition

How to apply

  1. For an adult, apply via Hertfordshire County Council adult social services; for a child, apply via Hertfordshire County Council children's social services
  2. An occupational therapist assesses you and visits your home to decide what equipment and adaptations are needed
  3. A financial assessment determines your grant amount
  4. The council considers whether the proposed adaptations are practical for your property; if not, it helps you look at alternatives, including moving home
  5. If the property is suitable, the works are carried out
  6. Building Control inspects and signs off the completed work

The application process is currently overseen by The Building Control (Hertfordshire) Company.

You may have to repay a grant over £5,000 if you move, sell, or it stops being your main home within 10 years of the works being completed.

Have ready

Formal permission from your landlord for the proposed adaptations (tenants only)
