Scotmid Co-operative (Scottish Midland Co-operative Society Limited)

Scotmid Community Grant

Scotmid Co-operative's Community Grants give up to £500 to clubs, charities and community groups in the communities served by its stores in Scotland and northern England (including its Lakes & Dales stores), for equipment, events or fundraising. Applicants must be Scotmid members (membership costs £1) and need an independent referee; applications are decided by the Regional Committee for the area. Any eligible applicant can also opt, on the same form, to be considered for a Member Choice Award, where shortlisted groups go to a members' vote for £5,000 (top-voted group per region) or £1,000 (other shortlisted groups).

Who can apply

  • Local community, self-help or voluntary groups and charities (including local branches of national charities), or individuals acting for the benefit of the local community, that are based within the geographic boundaries of one of Scotmid's stores and act for the wider benefit of a community Scotmid serves
  • The applicant must be a Scotmid member
  • Groups do not have to be charities
  • Stores and Membership & Community Managers cover the North (AB, IV, KW, PH, DD postcodes), East (DD6, EH, KY, TD), West (PA, FK, G, ML, KA, DG) regions of Scotland and Lakes & Dales in northern England
  • Only one application per person/organisation/event is supported in any 12 months

What it funds

One-off investments, purchases or events that address a community issue or support a local community initiative and benefit a community served by a Scotmid store, for example purchasing equipment, organising events or supporting fundraising. The applicant's primary focus should fall into one of these categories:

  • Active Lifestyles & Healthy Ageing
  • Arts, Culture & Heritage
  • Charity & Volunteering
  • Children, Youth & Families
  • Community-Led Innovation
  • Sustainability & Environment
  • Social Impact & Ethical Practices
  • Health, Wellbeing & Mental Resilience
  • Equity & Inclusion
  • Tech & Digital Inclusion

A grant may be paid as money, Society vouchers or a mix.

What it will not fund

  • Groups other than community, self-help and voluntary groups, including groups which use their surplus for the benefit of an individual or business
  • Auxiliary groups of Scotmid
  • Overseas charities and projects benefiting communities overseas
  • Projects that do not benefit a community served by one of Scotmid's stores
  • Religious worship, or fundraising or campaigning associated with any religion (religious bodies considered only where there is wider community benefit)
  • Core activities of statutory services, such as school improvements, libraries or essential hospital equipment
  • Party political activity
  • Individual sponsorship
  • Travel, accommodation and entry fees
  • Ongoing running costs such as rent, bills and staffing (including contractors and trainers)
  • Sessional workers such as instructors, contractors, trainers or speakers
  • Premises or hire costs
  • Expenditure incurred before the grant confirmation letter
  • More than one application per person, organisation or event in a 12-month period

How to apply

  1. Become a Scotmid member if you are not one already (£1)
  2. Read the Community Grant terms and conditions
  3. Optionally contact your region's Membership & Community Manager (listed by postcode on the Membership & Community Team page) with questions
  4. Complete the online application form via 'Apply here' on the grant page, at least twelve weeks before the grant is needed, including details of an independent referee; complete the 'Member Choice' section if you also want to be considered for a Member Choice Award
  5. Your application is considered by the Regional Committee for your area
  6. If successful, provide a report on how the grant was used if requested and return any unspent money

The Regional Committee's decision is final.

Member Choice Awards are decided by a vote of Scotmid members among groups shortlisted in each region (six per Scottish region, three in Lakes & Dales); the top-voted group gets £5,000 and the others £1,000.
