Camden Giving

We Make Camden Kit

The We Make Camden Kit, run by Camden Giving with Camden Council and local businesses, gives Seed grants of £500 to £2,000 to Camden residents, small Camden-based community organisations (income under £250,000) and schools to try out ideas that contribute to Camden's missions: food access, opportunities for young people, representative leadership, stronger communities and eco-friendly neighbourhoods. Decisions are made monthly by a panel of 12 Camden residents, which encourages applications from people with lived experience of inequality and those who have struggled to get funding elsewhere. Past Seed recipients who are constituted non-profits can return for a Growth grant of up to £5,000.

Who can apply

  • Seed grants (first-time applicants): Camden residents delivering activities for charitable purposes (applying as individuals, including members of informal groups such as a gardening group); constituted voluntary and community sector organisations based in Camden with annual income below £250,000 (the form lists charities, CICs or similar VCSOs, companies limited by guarantee, companies limited by shares and tenants' and residents' associations); and schools delivering projects outside the normal curriculum or designed and led by students
  • The FAQ also lists unconstituted groups with income below £250,000
  • Organisations need a bank statement in the organisation's name, valid public liability insurance, a governing document and, if working with vulnerable people, a safeguarding policy (residents get help with insurance and safeguarding)
  • Seed grants can be received once
  • Growth grants (up to £5,000) are only for past successful Seed grantees who have completed reporting and are registered non-profits with Companies House or the Charity Commission

What it funds

Ideas and projects (lasting no more than 12 months) that make Camden a better place and contribute to one of Camden's missions:

  • Access to food for all (including experimental ideas, new partnerships, entrepreneurial and community-led responses to food poverty)
  • Opportunities for children and young people (projects designed with or by them)
  • Representative leadership (supporting people from under-represented and marginalised backgrounds to lead)
  • Stronger communities (connecting residents, e.g. sports clubs, walking groups, art projects, communal spaces, events)
  • Eco-friendly neighbourhoods (food growing, composting, litter picking, community gardens, recycling, upcycling, clean air)

Projects must show how they bring together different Camden groups and communities.

Seed grants of £500 to £2,000 are for trialling a new idea for the first time; Growth grants of up to £5,000 are for returning successful applicants to build on a trialled project.

Grantees can also get support with insurance, safeguarding and connections.

What it will not fund

  • Projects lasting more than 12 months
  • Growth grants for first-time applicants (a Seed project must be delivered first)
  • Reapplying to this fund for the same project after a successful Growth grant
  • Organisations based outside Camden (previously allowed, no longer)
  • Organisations with annual income of £250,000 or more
  • School projects that are part of the normal curriculum (unless designed and led by students)

  4. Optionally submit a video pitch of up to 2 minutes (encouraged)
  5. The community panel reviews applications monthly (with breaks over Christmas and Ramadan)
  6. If successful, work with the grants team on public liability insurance, safeguarding training, DBS checks and a project plan, sign the Terms of Grant form, then receive the grant
