An education fund, part of the St Olave's & St Saviour's Schools Foundation, for young people under 25 who live in the London Borough of Southwark. Youth organisations, groups and schools based in Southwark can get up to £3,000 per grant for educational or recreational projects (such as school trips, after-school clubs, youth activity projects, uniformed groups and educational workshops) for Southwark under-25s in financial need. Young people can also apply as individuals (up to £2,000 per academic year, usually £500-£700). Trustees meet four times a year; the next application deadline is 11 January 2027.

Who can apply

  • Youth organisations, groups and schools based in the London Borough of Southwark that provide activities for young people under 25 who are resident in Southwark, in pursuit of their education, and who are in demonstrable need of financial assistance
  • The project must be based in Southwark and most participants must be under 25
  • Applicants should be the end commissioner of a project (the users rather than the providers)
  • Organisations must have a child protection (safeguarding) policy and confirm that everyone coming into contact with children is DBS checked
  • Charity registration is not required (the form asks for a charity number 'if applicable')
  • First-time applicants must name two local community or organisation leaders who support their work
  • Individuals under 25 who currently live in Southwark can apply separately for their own education costs

What it funds

  • Organisation grants (up to £3,000 for any one grant) for activities that give educational or recreational benefits to young people under 25 who live in the London Borough of Southwark and are in demonstrable need of financial assistance
  • Past examples:
  • School trips
  • After school club activities
  • Youth activity projects
  • Uniformed organisations
  • Educational workshops

Educational funding has priority, but sports training, music, drama and crafts are also considered.

Projects must be clearly defined and costed; projects can be funded on a full cost recovery basis.

Grants will not normally cover the whole project cost, and trustees look for other contributions.

Organisations can apply for several grants over time, but more than one grant a year is unusual.

Grants are paid on receipt of supplier invoices or proforma invoices.

Individuals (under 25, living in Southwark) can separately get up to £2,000 per academic year over 3 years (normally £500-£700 per application) for direct educational needs such as laptops, books, travel, vocational training costs and musical instruments.

What it will not fund

  • Day-to-day running costs of an organisation (not normally funded)
  • Individual salaries and administration costs
  • School fees, college fees and university loan fees
  • Utility/domestic bills, childcare, food or payment of debts
  • Capital expenditure
  • Postgraduate (masters degree) students
  • Retrospective funding (items already purchased or expenditure incurred before trustees approve the grant)
  • Organisations without a child protection policy, or where not all staff and volunteers are DBS checked

  7. If awarded, send supplier invoices or proforma invoices to claim the grant within 12 months

Later deadlines: 5 April 2027 (meeting 29 April), 7 June 2027 (meeting 1 July), 13 September 2027 (meeting 7 October). Late applications are carried forward to the next meeting.
