Hospice UK (supported by the Wolfson Foundation)

Hospice Care Home Training grant programme

Grants of up to £2,000 per course for hospices that are members of Hospice UK, to run CPD-accredited training courses or study days for local care home staff on dementia care for people approaching the end of life. Training must be free or heavily discounted for care home staff, and in-house training for the hospice's own staff is not funded. Funding comes from the Wolfson Foundation and is allocated first come, first served from a £50,000 programme budget. Each hospice can receive at most two grants a year.

Who can apply

  • Hospices, or groups of hospices, that are members of Hospice UK
  • Hospice UK says its grants are open only to its member organisations
  • The training must be for staff of local care homes in the hospice's own area; care homes and other organisations cannot apply themselves
  • Applications must reach Hospice UK at least one month before the course or study day
  • A hospice may apply more than once a year but can receive at most two grants a year
  • It is responsible for assessing need, planning, promoting and running the training, crediting Hospice UK and the Wolfson Foundation, and reporting afterwards

What it funds

  • Costs of running training courses or study days, delivered by a hospice or a group of hospices, for local care home staff in the hospice's own area
  • Courses must focus on dementia care for people approaching the end of life and must be CPD accredited
  • The aims are:
  • More collaboration and knowledge-sharing between hospices and care homes
  • Meeting unmet education needs by making training as cheap and widely available as possible
  • Direct impact on care for people with dementia who have palliative care needs
  • Courses can be new or repeats of earlier courses, including courses this programme has funded before
  • A grant can cover a single event or a series such as a set of workshops
  • Eligible costs include:
  • Teaching
  • Travel
  • Administration
  • Venue hire or training facilities
  • Catering

The grant is based on the submitted budget and is not increased if costs overrun or income falls short.

What it will not fund

  • Any course or event that has already started or taken place (no retrospective funding)
  • Courses that are not accredited
  • Subsistence, travel and accommodation costs incurred whilst attending courses
  • In-house training
  • Courses already subsidised by Hospice UK
  • Applications from outside the UK
  • Events outside the UK
  • Applications from organisations that are not members of Hospice UK

  3. Get a statement of support from the chief executive or equivalent
  4. Apply through the online form linked from the programme page ('Apply Now', a YourCause grants portal that needs an applicant account), at least one month before the course
  5. After the course, submit the Claim Form with an account of expenditure and the evaluation form summarising participants' evaluations and their professional backgrounds and workplaces

Grants must be claimed within 12 months of award, or Hospice UK may withdraw the funding.

Have ready

  • Budget breakdown of course costs (a more detailed breakdown can be attached separately)

After the course, a Claim Form with an account of expenditure and an evaluation form are required.
