Hull Aid in Sickness Trust

Hull Aid in Sickness Trust Grants

A small Hull charity giving grants for items or services that benefit the health and wellbeing of people in need who are sick, convalescent, disabled or infirm and live in the Hull City Council area. Most grants go to individuals on low incomes (normally £150 to £600 per application, with no minimum), considered at quarterly trustee meetings. Charitable organisations whose objectives match the Trust's can also apply by letter for larger lump-sum grants, but these are considered only at the trustees' July meeting. Social or field worker teams approved by the trustees can get a small emergency lump sum to pass on to clients.

Who can apply

  • Individuals: anyone living within the boundary of Hull City Council (not the East Riding, even with an HU postcode) who has a physical or mental illness, disability or infirmity, can provide recent medical evidence of it, and whose household has a low income
  • Applicants under 16 apply through a parent or legal guardian
  • The same person can apply again six months after a grant
  • Charitable organisations: those whose objectives match the Trust's (providing a benefit to the health of people in need living in Hull) can apply by letter for larger lump-sum grants, considered only at the July trustees' meeting
  • Social/field worker teams that meet the Trust's terms and conditions and are approved by the trustees can receive a small emergency lump sum to distribute to clients

What it funds

Items or services that will clearly benefit the applicant's health and improve their quality of life. Typical examples include:

  • Household furnishings, carpets or appliances
  • Mobility aids such as riser/recliner chairs, specialist beds and mattresses, mobility scooters and ramps
  • Appliances or equipment modified for specialist needs (for example talking microwaves or adapted household/electrical appliances for people who are partially sighted)
  • Other medical or nursing aids that a professional has recommended and that are not available from other sources

Individual grants are normally £150-£600 depending on the funds available; where an item costs more, the Trust will often help if the balance can be found elsewhere.

Charitable organisations whose objectives match the Trust's (benefiting the health of people in need living in Hull) can apply for larger lump-sum grants.

Approved social/field worker teams can receive a small lump-sum 'emergency' grant to pay out in smaller amounts to clients or patients in need.

What it will not fund

  • Items available from other sources, such as other funding, family help, Social Services, or that are affordable by monthly payments
  • Grants that may be used to reduce or repay debts
  • Reimbursement for items already purchased
  • People living outside the Hull City Council area, including East Riding of Yorkshire residents with an HU postcode
  • Applications without recent medical evidence (individual grants)

How to apply

  1. Individuals: download and print the 'Application Form for an Individual Grant' from the website
  2. Complete and sign every page: personal and household details, the item(s) needed with costs/quotes and how they will help, the nature of the illness or disability, all weekly household income and expenditure, any other applications made for the same item, and the supporting organisation's details
  3. Attach medical evidence dated within the last 6 months, a quote for the exact cost of the item, and a letter of support from the supporting professional or organisation
  4. Post the application to the Clerk to the Trustees, Hull Aid in Sickness Trust, c/o Hull CVS, The Strand, 75 Beverley Road, Hull HU3 1XL
  5. The Clerk writes to confirm acceptance and the date of the trustees' meeting that will consider it, and phones the applicant shortly before the meeting to confirm details
  6. After the meeting the Clerk writes with the outcome and, if successful, a cheque made out to the supplier or the supporting organisation; return the receipt form and proof of purchase

Charitable organisations apply by letter to the Clerk to the Trustees (haist@hull-cvs.co.uk) for larger lump-sum grants, which are considered only at the July trustees' meeting.

Social/field worker teams wanting an emergency lump sum apply directly to the Clerk to the Trustees.

Applicants do not have to meet the trustees; the Trust's visitor may visit the applicant at home after written notice.

Have ready

  • Completed and signed application form (individual grants)
  • Medical evidence dated within the last 6 months from a professional in close contact with the applicant (e.g. GP letter or note, Occupational Therapist assessment)
  • A quote for the exact amount of the item requested
  • Letter of support from the supporting organisation or social/field worker explaining the need and benefit

These are for individual grants. Organisations apply by letter; the website does not list what the letter must include. Proof of purchase is required after an award.
