The Johnson Foundation

The Johnson Foundation Grants

The Johnson Foundation, set up in 1987 by Wirral businessman Peter Johnson, gives grants to registered charities and certain other organisations based in and working mainly within the Liverpool City Region, in the areas of welfare, youth, community, arts, education and health. Grants cover capital and activity costs but not staff or operational costs. Applications are open at any time on a single-stage Word form and considered at trustee meetings four times a year; no grant amounts are published.

Who can apply

  • Only organisations that both meet the geographic criteria and are one of these types: UK registered charities based, registered and delivering their primary charitable activities within the Liverpool City Region; Charitable Incorporated Organisations; educational establishments (including schools and universities); housing associations; museums and galleries
  • You do not need to be invited, but you cannot apply while receiving a grant from the Foundation or within 12 months of the letter giving the outcome of your last request
  • For partnership projects only the lead organisation may apply
  • If part of a larger national charity, give details for your Liverpool City Region organisation only

What it funds

  • Capital and activity expenditure for projects delivering a direct benefit within the Liverpool City Region in the areas of welfare, youth, community, arts, education and health
  • The trustees have no target spending by category
  • They may give a different amount from the one requested rather than working on an all-or-nothing basis

What it will not fund

  • UK registered charities without a working base in the Liverpool City Region
  • Individuals
  • Staff salaries or any staffing costs, including contributions towards salaries, wages or core staffing
  • Operational costs
  • Churches
  • Social enterprises not registered with the Charity Commission
  • Sporting associations that are not registered charities or registered Community Amateur Sports Clubs
  • Projects or organisations whose work does not deliver a direct benefit within the Liverpool City Region
  • Animal welfare charities
  • Charities that spend most of their income outside the UK
  • Organisations currently receiving a grant from the Foundation, or that have applied within the last 12 months
  • Organisations with liquid reserves covering more than 12 months' expenditure are unlikely to be funded unless they make an exceptionally convincing case of financial need

How to apply

  1. Read the guidelines on the Funding page and the Johnson Foundation Charter
  2. Download the application form (Word document) from the Funding page, or email hello@johnsonfoundation.co.uk for a copy
  3. 4. Email the completed form in Word format to hello@johnsonfoundation.co.uk; the Foundation sends an acknowledgement
  5. The Foundation may ask questions, request revisions or visit; the application goes to the next trustees' meeting (four a year, dates vary)
  6. If successful, sign a grant agreement before payment and send progress updates and photographs

Only completed forms in Word format are accepted.

Send extra information only if asked.
