The Joseph and Annie Cattle Trust

Joseph and Annie Cattle Trust Grants

Grants from a long-established Hull charity to help vulnerable people in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire - the aged, disabled and underprivileged, and children with dyslexia. It works only through charitable bodies and statutory authorities, in two ways: applications on behalf of individuals or families (mainly essential household items such as cookers, fridge-freezers, washing machines, beds and specialist aids), and project requests for work with these groups. No grant sizes or deadlines are published, and applications are made by post or fax, not online.

Who can apply

  • Charitable bodies and statutory authorities only - the Trust does not give grants to individuals
  • Project applications must be for work with aged, disabled or underprivileged people or children with dyslexia in Hull and East Yorkshire; the applicant must show work already carried out in the Hull and East Riding area and explain how it will guarantee the grant is used exclusively there
  • Applications on behalf of individuals or families can come from organisations supporting them and able to assess their needs and administer the grant, e.g. statutory or charitable health care, social care or advice services, probation and youth offending, tenancy support, education services, NHS and primary care, Sure Start and children's centres
  • Individual applications for Hull residents (council-tax registered with Hull City Council) must instead go through Hull City Council's Welfare Rights Service (welfare.rights@hullcc.gov.uk, 01482 300300); the Trust's own form is for East Riding residents

What it funds

Two kinds of support.

  1. Projects and work with groups of people in Hull and East Yorkshire who are aged, disabled or underprivileged, or children suffering from dyslexia; grants must be used exclusively in the Hull and East Riding area
  2. Applications made by charitable or statutory bodies on behalf of individuals or families facing exceptionally difficult circumstances or a crisis - disabled people, and people in severe poverty also facing issues such as domestic violence, drug and alcohol misuse, estrangement, illness, abuse, neglect, behavioural or mental health issues

For these the Trust funds critical household items: electric cookers, fridge-freezers, washing machines (particularly where there are disability or soiling issues), beds and mattresses, carpeting (up to £500), and specialist aids and equipment, including delivery and installation.

What it will not fund

  • Grants direct to individuals (applications must come from a charitable body or statutory authority)
  • Applications on behalf of individual Hull residents using the Trust's form - these go through Hull City Council's Welfare Rights Service
  • Individual applications based mainly on financial hardship (not normally considered)
  • Individual applications where the person has not exhausted support from public funds, including Local Authority Welfare Provision
  • Individual applications on behalf of a person with no recourse to public funds
  • Repeat applications unless there has been a significant change in the person's circumstances
  • Gas cookers
  • Fuel or utility bills, council tax or rent
  • Loans or debts, bankruptcy fees or rent deposits
  • Household repairs, adaptations or additions
  • Childcare, child-minding or after-school clubs
  • Televisions, computers or any other item not essential to a person's health and wellbeing
  • Inexpensive items that can be bought over time, such as bedding, towels, curtains and utensils

How to apply

  1. For a project: write to the Trust with full details of your request - your organisation and contact details with latest financial statements; work completed to date in the Hull and East Riding area; how you will guarantee the grant is used exclusively there; the project with detailed costings and supporting information; and other grants received or being considered
  2. For an individual or family (East Riding residents): download the application pack (Word) from the website, read the guidance, and complete the form in legible handwriting in black ink
  3. Send it with a covering letter on your organisation's letterhead (or bearing its stamp) and any supporting papers
  4. Post to The Administrator, The Joseph & Annie Cattle Trust, P O Box 23, Patrington, Hull HU12 0WF, or fax to 01964 671742
  5. The Trust notifies you of the outcome in writing

Do not use the Trust's form for individual Hull residents - contact Hull City Council's Welfare Rights Service for a referral form.

If your organisation has had an award for the same people in the last 12 months, contact the Trust before applying. You can phone 01964 671742 to discuss a case first.
