The Linder Foundation

Linder Foundation Environment Grants

Project grants from the Linder Foundation for UK registered charities running local or regional land-based projects on biodiversity (such as sustainable farming), or preservation and reintroduction of red-listed species, in urban or rural settings. The average grant is £15,000 and must cover at least 50% of the project cost. Applications go through an online eligibility checker, then an expression of interest and an invited full application decided at trustee meetings three times a year.

Who can apply

  • Charities or exempt charities registered in the UK only
  • Projects must be in the UK, land based, local or regional rather than national, and engage local communities
  • The eligibility checker also asks whether you have at least three unrelated trustees and whether your unrestricted reserves exceed 12 months' expenditure

What it funds

Specific land-based projects relating to biodiversity (such as sustainable farming practices) and/or species preservation or reintroduction, in urban or rural environments, farm-based or across connected farms, and possibly with a research element providing the evidence base for change. Priorities:

  • Potential to be replicated or scaled up
  • Volunteer and/or community engagement
  • Biodiversity improvements for targeted species or habitat improvements
  • Local or regional projects
  • Improving carbon capture
  • Regenerative farming focused on healthy soils, farmland ecosystems, sustainable food production and carbon capture

Past grants include agroforestry with farms, water vole reintroduction and a tractor for wetland habitat management.

Average grant £15,000, which should cover at least 50% of the total project cost.

What it will not fund

  • Projects on a national scale
  • Projects that are not land based
  • Projects that do not engage local communities
  • Species preservation or reintroduction for species not on the red list (Joint Nature Conservation Committee)
  • Core running costs
  • Projects outside the UK (not typically funded)
  • Individuals, individual research or study, or sponsorship
