The Magdalen and Lasher Charity

Magdalen and Lasher Charity General Grants

The Magdalen and Lasher Charity, a Hastings charity dating from the thirteenth century, makes general grants for the prevention and relief of poverty and hardship among residents of the Borough of Hastings. Its General Grants Committee funds both individuals (normally through a sponsoring agency) and organisations dealing directly with need, hardship and distress among Hastings residents, usually for one-off specific projects. Grants supplement, and must not replace, public funding.

Who can apply

Organisations dealing directly with need, hardship and distress among residents of the Borough of Hastings, and individuals in need who have lived in the Borough for at least three years and are resident when they apply (individual applications are means tested and normally sponsored by an agency such as HARC, East Sussex social services, Citizens Advice 1066, a school, Christians Against Poverty, Xtrax or Brighton Housing Trust).

What it funds

  • Grants to organisations dealing directly with need, hardship and distress for residents of the Borough of Hastings, normally for one-off specific projects, with all grants paid within the year approved
  • The charity's wider objects are the prevention and relief of poverty and the relief of old age among people living in or near Hastings, including support of other charities doing similar work in Hastings

What it will not fund

  • Repayment of debts or loans
  • Legal fees
  • Funeral expenses (other than the cost of attending a funeral)
  • Purchase of vehicles
  • Costs that replace provision from public funds
  • Applications where other obvious sources of relief (e.g. social services) have not been approached first

How to apply

  1. Read the Grants page and the charity's guidelines on how to apply
  2. Approach other obvious sources of relief (e.g. social services) first
  3. Contact the Administrator for an application form (forms can also be downloaded or sent by post) and return it with any relevant papers or invoices

The 'Guidelines' link for community groups on the Grants page currently opens a 2025 thanksgiving service invitation rather than guidance, and the downloadable form is for individuals - organisations should contact the Administrator (07802 421523).
