Worcestershire County Council

Educational Wellbeing Grants

One-off grants of up to £3,000 from Worcestershire County Council's Public Health team for schools, colleges and early years settings in Worcestershire. The grants pay for innovative projects, outside the curriculum, that improve young people's physical or mental health and wellbeing, such as sport, nutrition, arts, music or mindfulness, and help prevent crime. It is a short online form, with a decision within two weeks. Independent (private) educational settings and privately owned businesses cannot apply.

Who can apply

  • Educational settings in Worcestershire: schools, colleges and early years settings
  • Independent (private) educational settings, privately owned businesses and nurseries that are private limited companies are excluded, so in practice this means state schools and colleges and not-for-profit early years settings such as charity-run or committee-run pre-schools
  • Community groups and charities that are not educational settings should use the sister Community Wellbeing Grants
  • Settings that have had a Public Health grant before must return the evidence for it before a new application is progressed

What it funds

  • Innovative mental health and wellbeing projects, and projects that prevent crime by increasing young people's engagement in art, cultural activities or physical activity
  • Examples are improving physical health (sports, diet and nutrition) or mental health and wellbeing (arts, music, mindfulness), social norms projects, and programmes for young people's social and personal development
  • Physical activity projects should aim to make activity a habit and reduce anti-social behaviour or involvement with crime, alcohol and drugs
  • Projects must be additional to the school curriculum (for example interventions, lunchtimes or after-school clubs) and focus on health and wellbeing rather than educational outcomes
  • Funding is one-off, so applicants must show how the project will be sustained, for example through long-lasting resources or training staff or volunteers
  • The form says short-term programmes or holiday-only projects are generally not eligible
  • Larger grants are possible through a more detailed procurement process where exceptional need is shown

What it will not fund

  • Purchases made before funding is confirmed
  • Activities that promote political beliefs or are designed to impose religious beliefs on others
  • Ongoing organisation core costs, e.g. staff
  • Activities where funding has already been secured
  • Payments to individuals
  • Privately owned businesses or independent educational settings (including nurseries run as private limited companies)
  • Organisations whose aims do not match the council's
  • Anything that discriminates against individuals or organisations
  • Anything that promotes illegal or immoral purposes
  • Significant capital expenditure
  • Curriculum or educational-outcome projects
  • Short-term programmes or holiday-only projects (generally)

  3. Within 6 months (or earlier), send photos and/or a brief video showing what you did and its impact on pupils' health and wellbeing, with consent from anyone featured
