The World Traders' Charitable Trust (Worshipful Company of World Traders)

World Traders' Charitable Trust grants

Annual donations, typically £1,000-£5,000, from the charitable trust of the Worshipful Company of World Traders to UK registered charities and non-profit educational organisations whose work fits the Trust's objects: promoting world trade, relieving poor people engaged in or affected by world trade, and education and training connected with world trade. The grant should normally be no more than 50% of a project's annual funding, and long-term projects can be supported for up to three consecutive years. Projects not linked to world trade should ideally have a City of London or inner London link. Applications on the Trust's form are considered by a committee that meets in March, June, September and December.

Who can apply

  • UK registered charities, including non-profit-making organisations involved in educational projects, whose objectives and charitable services are aligned with the Trust's objects (world trade, relief of poor people affected by world trade, and education and training in world trade)
  • The application form asks whether you are a UK registered charity/non-profit organisation and whether you are affiliated with the City of London or inner London; a City or inner London link is desirable, not required, and matters for projects not linked to world trade
  • Applicants must show how the balance of project funding will be met
  • No income limit or track-record requirement is stated
  • No geographic limit within the UK is stated

What it funds

Projects aligned with the Trust's objects:

  • Promoting world trade in all its aspects
  • Relief of poor persons engaged in, or affected by, world trade and their dependants
  • Education and training connected with the advancement of world trade
  • Other charitable institutions or purposes the Trustees think fit after consulting the Company

Single annual donations are typically £1,000-£5,000 (smaller amounts are sometimes given), normally no more than 50% of total project funding in any year.

The project's scope and expected results must be clear and measurable; approved projects are normally ones the Company can be publicly identified with; original or innovative projects are preferred; for projects not linked to world trade, a link with the City of London or inner London is desirable.

Long-term continuous projects can be supported, usually for up to three consecutive years (Trustees may extend).

Funding can go to an institution to cover study or other costs of an individual in the field of world trade.

Recent beneficiaries listed by the Company include educational charities, universities and colleges, and charities such as Blind in Business, CARA, Create Arts, Maytree, Skills Builder and The Brokerage.

What it will not fund

  • Direct donations to individuals (funding for an individual's study in world trade can go via an institution)
  • Requests for more than 50% of a project's total funding in any year (normally)
  • Applications not made on the Trust's funding form
  • Organisations that are not UK registered charities or non-profit organisations

How to apply

  1. Read the Guidance Notes on the Applications for Funding page and check the project fits the Trust's objects and evaluation criteria
  2. Download and complete the Application for Funding form (a Word copy is available from the Clerk), keeping it as brief as possible while addressing the criteria
  3. Send it to Liz Garner, Secretary, World Traders' Charitable Trust, preferably by email to clerk@world-traders.org, or by post to 9 Chawton End Close, Four Marks, Alton GU34 5BF
  4. The Charities Committee considers it at its next scheduled meeting (March, June, September or December)
  5. Suitable applications are forwarded to the Trustees with a recommendation at their next meeting; the Trustees' decision is final

Applications not made on the Trust's form cannot be considered.

No deadlines before committee meetings are published.

Have ready

  • Completed Application for Funding form (charity details, amount, one-off or annual, timeframe, alignment with the Trust's objects, approach to diversity and inclusion, approach to reducing carbon emissions, project details, projected costs, other funding sought and secured, timetable)
  • Details of two referees, one of whom should be your organisation's bank, solicitor or accountant

Projected costs can continue on a separate sheet; the form is signed and dated.
