Who can apply

  • Churches and organisations in the local authority area of Powys running projects working with residents of Powys
  • The application must show a clear need for financial support, financial hardship or additional support needs
  • Preference goes to applicants who can show exactly how they will meet the fund's objectives and who have not had support from the fund before
  • Multi-year core funding requires accounts for at least the last 12 months and a request below 50% of annual turnover
  • Grants must be spent within one year of the offer letter
  • Every applicant must also meet Community Foundation Wales's Minimum Expected Standards: a governing body of at least 3 members (with an independent member if any are related) meeting at least quarterly; a signed governing document with a not-for-profit clause and a dissolution clause/asset lock; recent signed accounts or an income/expenditure sheet; at least 2 unrelated payment authorisers; a bank account in the organisation's own name; a safeguarding policy in its own name with appropriate training and DBS checks; and an EDI policy
  • CICs registered in the last 18 months are not eligible

What it funds

  • Projects that contribute to the refurbishment and upkeep of churches, chapels and community/village halls within the county
  • Protecting historic buildings
  • Projects working to address disadvantage to benefit Powys residents
  • Projects providing social and recreational activities for Powys residents
  • Projects that encourage the arts

Capital grants may be awarded to help organisations furnish and keep up buildings. 1-year project or small capital item funding is offered, and multi-year funding (including core costs) of up to 3 years if you have accounts for at least the last 12 months and ask for less than 50% of your annual turnover.

What it will not fund

  • Retrospective costs (incurred before the grant offer letter is received and the signed terms and conditions returned)
  • Fundraising for other groups or charities
  • Community Interest Companies registered in the last 18 months
  • A second grant from the fund while you hold one (a new grant must start after the current one ends)

How to apply

  1. Read the Powys Welsh Church Act Fund criteria and the Minimum Expected Standards
  2. When the window opens (5 April 2027), complete the online application form through Community Foundation Wales's Grants Hub, adding the multi-year section if you want a three-year grant

Dates are 'subject to change'; Community Foundation Wales suggests signing up to its Grants newsletter for updates.

Have ready

  • Governing document, signed and dated by the Chair or Treasurer of the governing body (or a Director), with a not-for-profit clause and a dissolution clause/asset lock (CICs must name the organisation in their asset lock)
  • Most recent official accounts or an income/expenditure sheet, signed and dated by the Chair or Treasurer (or a Director); explain if it is over 18 months old
  • Financial forecast (projected income, expenditure and income-generation plans) if the organisation is in its first 12-18 months
  • Recent bank statement or paying-in slip for the account in the organisation's own name
  • Safeguarding policy in the organisation's own name
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy

These come from Community Foundation Wales's Minimum Expected Standards, which every applicant must meet; the application is made through its online Grants Hub.
