Who can apply

  • Gravesham residents where a disabled person (adult or child) lives in the property or will come to live there
  • Mandatory grants are means tested, except for children; adaptations under £12,000 can use the fast-track route without a means test
  • Discretionary grants depend on available funding and further conditions in the Private Sector Housing Assistance Policy

What it funds

  • Making it easier to get into and out of the property, e.g. widening doors and installing external ramps
  • Ensuring the safety of the disabled person and others, e.g. a specially adapted room or improved lighting
  • Providing or improving access to the bedroom, kitchen, toilet, washbasin and bath or shower, e.g. a stair lift, through-floor lift or bathroom adaptations
  • Improving or providing a heating system suited to the disabled person's needs
  • Adapting lighting or main door controls to make them easier to use
  • Relocation Grant (discretionary, up to £10,000) where the home cannot reasonably be adapted
  • Discretionary DFG (up to £10,000) for vulnerable people with critical health conditions who cannot afford their contribution, or as a top-up to the mandatory grant
  • Hospital Discharge Grant (up to £3,000) for essential works so someone can return home from hospital

How to apply

  1. Contact Kent County Council's Assessment and Enablement Team on 03000 416161 and ask for the Occupational Therapist Duty Officer
  2. An occupational therapist visits to assess your needs
  3. The council carries out a test of your resources (not for children's grants) and tells you your grant entitlement
  4. Confirm you wish to continue; the occupational therapist provides detailed recommendations
  5. An agent (unless you choose otherwise) makes the formal application to the council for approval before works start

where works cost over £5,000 a local land charge of up to £10,000 may be placed on the property, repayable if sold within 10 years
