Enfield Council

Disabled Facilities Grant (Enfield)

Enfield Council's Disabled Facilities Grant pays up to £30,000 towards changes to a private home so a disabled person can carry on living independently, such as ramps, wider doors, stair lifts, level-access showers or adapted kitchens and bathrooms. It is means tested on the income and assets of the applicant and their partner, except for a disabled child under 19. The first step is an occupational therapist's assessment; the council decides within 6 months of the application.

Who can apply

  • Disabled people in Enfield who are private tenants or owners of a home not owned by the council; landlords applying on behalf of a disabled tenant; or the parent or guardian of a disabled child under 19
  • The grant is means tested on all income and assets of the applicant and their spouse or partner (earnings, savings, pensions, benefits, stocks, shares and other property), except for applications for a disabled child under 19
  • You may have to pay part of the cost
  • You must stay in the home for at least 5 years after it has been adapted, and must receive a confirmation letter from the Private Sector Housing team before work starts

What it funds

Work to make changes in your home so you can carry on living independently, including:

  • Widening doors and installing ramps
  • Giving easier entrance to rooms and facilities (such as putting in a stair lift or a level access shower)
  • Changing heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
  • Making the building safe
  • Putting in an adapted bathroom or kitchen
  • Making it easier to get into your garden if you have one

What it will not fund

  • Work that has already been started or finished
  • Homes owned by the council

How to apply

  1. Have your or your child's needs assessed by an occupational therapist: complete the council's online referral form, selecting 'Moving around my/their home' on the first page, or call the Adult Social Care Connect Team on 0208 379 1001
  2. The Private Sector Housing team arranges a property survey
  3. If the work qualifies, the Grant Officer or surveyor helps you fill in the grant application form
  4. The council writes within 6 months of your application to say whether a grant is awarded
  5. Wait for the confirmation letter before starting any work

Enfield Care and Repair can help organise and supervise the work; its fee (currently 10% of the cost of works) is paid by the grant when the work is grant-funded
