Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council

Disabled Facilities Grant (Nuneaton and Bedworth)

The mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant pays up to £30,000 (the current maximum in England) towards adapting a disabled person's home so they can keep living there, for example a level-access shower, stair lift, ramp or wider doorways. Works must be recommended as essential by an Occupational Therapist or Housing Assessment Officer. The grant is means tested except for council tenants and children and young people. Nuneaton and Bedworth residents start with the council's Heart enquiry form.

Who can apply

  • Disabled people living in Nuneaton and Bedworth borough, whether homeowners, private tenants, council tenants or housing association tenants, including people with caring responsibilities for a disabled child or dependant who lives with them
  • Works must be recommended as essential and necessary by a Warwickshire County Council Occupational Therapist or a Housing Assessment Officer
  • There is an assessment of health and welfare needs and a financial means test for owner-occupiers, private tenants and housing association tenants (not council tenants)
  • Children and young people are exempt from the means test; most applicants with modest income and savings or on a means-tested benefit such as Guaranteed Pension Credit pay no contribution

What it funds

Works that help people with limiting disabilities access their home and essential facilities within it, such as bathing, toileting and cooking, and make the home safe, for example:

  • Level access shower or wet room
  • Stair lift
  • Extension or conversion (for example, garage) to your property where there are no alternative means of providing access to essential facilities, particularly on the ground floor
  • Minor works - grab rails and handrails
  • Ramped access to the property
  • Widening of doorways
