Council of the Isles of Scilly
Disabled Facilities Grant (Isles of Scilly)
The mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant pays up to £30,000 towards adapting the home of a disabled person on the Isles of Scilly, for example ramps, wider doors, a stairlift or downstairs bathroom. It is means tested on household income and savings, except for disabled children under 18. Start by contacting the council's Adult or Children Social Care team; an occupational therapist assesses what is needed, and approved cases are funded in order of assessed clinical need.

Who can apply
- Residents of the Isles of Scilly where the applicant, or someone living in the property, is disabled
- The applicant or the person applied for must own the property or be a tenant, and intend to live there during the grant period (currently five years)
- Landlords with a disabled tenant can also apply
- Tenants in social housing should contact their housing provider or association first
- The council must be satisfied that the work is necessary and appropriate to meet the disabled person's needs, and reasonable and practicable given the age and condition of the property
- The amount depends on household income and savings and you may need to contribute; disabled children under 18 can get a grant without their parents' income being taken into account
What it funds
Adaptations to your property to help a disabled person live in their home, for example:
- Widening doors and installing ramps
- Improving access to rooms and facilities, such as a stairlift or a downstairs bathroom
- Providing a heating system suitable for your needs
- Adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
if the council asks you to employ a qualified architect or surveyor to plan and oversee the work, the grant can be used towards their fees.
What it will not fund
Work started before the council approves your application (you might not get any grant)
How to apply
- Contact the Adult or Children Social Care team on 0300 1234 105 to discuss your situation
- An occupational therapist arranges an appointment and recommends the changes needed (a statement of need)
- Applications are held on a waiting list in strict order of assessed clinical need and allocated funding as soon as possible
- Once funding is allocated, the council contacts you and an officer visits to discuss the works and costings; free help is available to complete the grant paperwork
you may need to apply separately for planning permission or building regulations approval. Demand is high and funding is limited. A self-assessment tool on the page lets you check whether adaptations could help.
