Who can apply

  • Private owner occupiers, private tenants and housing association tenants in South Kesteven who have had an assessment by an Occupational Therapist which suggested adaptations to their home are required for their needs
  • Council tenants should enquire with the council's Housing team instead
  • The works must be necessary and appropriate to meet the needs of the disabled occupant and reasonable and practicable to carry out
  • The grant is means tested and you may need to pay part or all of the cost
  • In certain cases a local land charge of up to £10,000 is placed on the property, repayable if it is sold or disposed of within 10 years; if the adaptation is no longer needed within five years you must tell the council, which may remove equipment such as a stair lift

What it funds

Essential adaptations identified in the Occupational Therapist assessment as 'necessary and appropriate', to the council's standard specification, such as:

  • Installing a stair lift
  • Modifying a bathroom
  • Providing ramps
  • Making doorways wider
  • Making sleeping and toilet facilities accessible

you can have work done above the council's specification, but must pay the extra cost yourself.

What it will not fund

  • Work started before you have submitted a full application and been told the decision (no retrospective grants)
  • Further works on the property once the grant is set for adaptations costing less than £30,000
  • Additional costs from disputes between you and your contractor

How to apply

  1. Request an assessment from Lincolnshire County Council: Adult Social Care team on 01522 782155, or the Children with Disabilities team on 01522 782111
  2. If the Occupational Therapist considers you may be eligible, they send the council a recommendation
  3. The Private Sector Housing Team contacts you to collect financial information and carry out a means test
  4. Plans are drawn up if needed and approved by the Occupational Therapist before the grant is approved

the contract for the works is between you and your contractor(s).
