The Childwick Trust

The Childwick Trust grants

Grants from the Childwick Trust, founded by racehorse owner Jim Joel, for registered charities in the South and South East of England. It funds healthcare charities (about half its grants, typically £5,000 to £20,000) caring for people with mental health issues, disabilities, serious or terminal illness, older people and veterans; welfare in the horseracing industry; and Jewish charities helping older people, disabled adults and young people. The current round closes on 31 October 2026.

Who can apply

  • Charities registered with the Charity Commission that have a direct impact in Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, London and Greater London, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Surrey or Sussex; the grant must benefit people living in the South and South East of England, and charities outside these counties are not supported
  • Branches of nationwide networks can apply only if based in the area
  • Priority goes to charities with an annual income under £5 million, except hospices
  • Grants under £10,000 are usually for small charities only
  • There must be a two-year gap between successful applications: you must declare you have not received funding in the last two years

What it funds

  • Healthcare charities offering care and support for people, prioritising adults with mental health issues, with learning or physical disabilities, or who have a serious illness, as well as people who are terminally ill, the elderly and veterans: specialist equipment, respite care, education and core costs
  • Building and refurbishment costs (healthcare), but only once the appeal has reached at least half of the total budget
  • Horseracing: the welfare of those in need within the racing industry — people who are elderly and retired, injured and those on a low income, plus young people who need support; other applications may be considered if related to the welfare of people in the industry or of Thoroughbred race horses
  • Jewish charities which promote the Jewish faith and help Jewish people in need, including the elderly, disabled adults and children and young people

the application form lets you ask for operation costs, a project, construction work or equipment.

What it will not fund

  • Medical research
  • Animal charities unless they are connected to Thoroughbred Racehorses
  • Charities offering legal advice
  • Charities outside the UK (except for South Africa, through the Jim Joel Fund)
  • Charities which are part of a nationwide network, unless based within the South/South East
  • Complementary health & therapy projects
  • Conferences & Seminars
  • HIV/Aids related projects
  • Homeless charities
  • Individuals or organisations applying on behalf of an individual
  • National Appeals
  • NHS Hospitals and other statutory bodies
  • Projects related to drugs or alcohol addiction
  • Students seeking sponsorship for educational or gap year projects
  • Universities – academic research, scholarships and bursaries
  • Charities outside Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, London & Greater London, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Surrey & Sussex

How to apply

  1. Read the Who we fund and Who we don't fund pages
  2. Confirm the declarations at the start of the online form: registered with the Charity Commission, no Childwick funding in two years, and the grant will benefit people in the South and South East
  3. Complete the online application at childwicktrust.org/apply-for-funding (progress can be saved and finished later) before the round closes on 31 October 2026
  4. The Trustees meet to review applications in detail and tell you the outcome within three months

you cannot view or amend an application after it is submitted.

South African charities apply through the Jim Joel Fund website instead.

Have ready

  • Charity Commission registration number
  • Annual operational costs, total project budget and a budget/costs breakdown
  • Funds raised to date and other sources of funding
  • Latest year-end income and expenditure

the online form asks for these figures; it does not ask for uploaded documents.
