Crook Hill Community Benefit Fund

Community benefit fund for the eleven-turbine Crook Hill Wind Farm on the moors between Littleborough and Todmorden, paid by Equitix Ltd and run by GrantScape. Grants of £250 to £10,000 go to community projects within 5km of the wind farm, with priority for the inner 4km. Capital and revenue costs are both eligible, though capital projects get priority, and bids over £2,000 are favoured if the group contributes cash or in-kind support. There is one round a year; the next closes on 10 February 2027. The fund has about £35,000 a year, index-linked.

Who can apply

  • Voluntary and community groups, parish and town councils, local authorities applying on behalf of a community organisation for a project that has come directly from the community (evidence that it is community driven may be required), charities delivering local services, schools and educational establishments delivering projects outside LEA requirements, and social enterprises and CICs operating on a non-profit-distributing basis (at least three unrelated directors not living at the same address)
  • Applicants need a written constitution, set of rules or governing document and a bank or building society account in the organisation's name
  • The project must be located within 5km of Crook Hill Wind Farm (on the moors between Littleborough, Whitworth and Todmorden, covering parts of Rochdale, Calderdale and Rossendale); projects within the inner 4km get priority
  • Check the postcode on GrantScape's map
  • Groups can receive one grant a year and must complete a funded project before applying again

What it funds

Any community project which is for the benefit of residents of the local area, capital (e.g. materials, equipment) or revenue (e.g. staff and running costs), for example:

  • Projects to improve public amenities e.g. community halls, sports facilities
  • Footpath works
  • Environmental and wildlife projects including projects to improve public parks and open spaces
  • Activities / events to engage the local community
  • Energy efficiency or renewable energy projects, such as insulation, efficient boilers or small scale renewable energy installations at community amenities

the list is not exhaustive. Priority is given to capital projects, and for applications over £2,000 to groups contributing to the project (cash, a secured or pending grant, or in-kind labour or materials).

What it will not fund

  • Commercial organisations
  • Private membership-based sports clubs and facilities, unless membership is open to the general public without undue restriction (e.g. not membership by nomination organisations or with restrictive charges)
  • Projects that only benefit one individual
  • Projects that are narrowly religious in focus or that support a party political campaign
  • Retrospective funding (works or spending must begin after the funding decision and a formal grant contract is issued)
  • Works considered a statutory responsibility, such as scheduled transport services, works to public highways and public car parks
