Chapman Charitable Trust

Chapman Charitable Trust grants

Grants of exactly £1,000, £2,000 or £3,000 for registered UK charities working on nature conservation and the natural environment, access to the arts (especially for young people), or physical and mental wellbeing, with a preference for work on root causes and for research organisations. National charities across the UK can apply; local charities only if they work in North Wales or South East England. Trustees meet in March and September and receive over 500 applications per meeting, so the success rate is 20% or less.

Who can apply

  • Registered UK charities with a Charity Commission number; educational or research establishments with charitable status are also eligible
  • National charities (including Scottish charities operating across the UK) can apply from anywhere; local charities only if their beneficiaries or activities are in North Wales or South East England, meaning Greater London, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire
  • CICs, CASCs, cooperative societies and other not-for-profits cannot apply
  • Successful applicants generally wait at least 2 years before a further grant; unsuccessful ones can reapply at any time

What it funds

Charities which address the root causes of problems, under three headings:

  • Conserving our natural environment and promoting the sustainable use of resources: conserving and protecting wildlife species and habitats through direct management of sites and research (particularly into causes of decline and potential solutions), and projects reducing human impacts on biodiversity and natural systems, particularly through reducing waste and use of fossil fuels
  • Increasing the accessibility of the arts, especially for young people: projects for groups who don't normally have the opportunity to participate in music, drama, dance or other arts, arts organisations reaching out to schools (including special needs schools), programmes using the arts (especially music) to improve mental wellbeing, and a limited number of community arts festivals
  • Promoting physical and mental wellbeing: education, research or programmes counteracting adverse trends in wellbeing, e.g. sports activities, research into narrow medical conditions that may not receive mainstream charity funding, community wellbeing programmes, the future mental health of young people, and charities helping deprived or affected groups such as disabled children, refugees new to the UK, ex-offenders and dementia sufferers

a few grants go to the continuing care of the disadvantaged, old or sick, but the proportion is low. Research organisations are particularly welcome.

What it will not fund

  • Individuals and their welfare, whether in the UK or abroad, including sponsorship of education, research or travel
  • Community Interest Companies (CICs)
  • Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs)
  • Cooperative Societies and not-for-profit organisations
  • Organisations without a Charity Commission number (except educational or research establishments with charitable status)
  • Local charities outside North Wales and South East England
  • A further grant within 2 years of a successful application (generally)
