The Sunrise Foundation CIO
Sunrise Foundation Grants
Grants from a Bristol-based foundation (registered charity 1172756) to voluntary, community and charity organisations, schools, churches and health bodies delivering projects in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Its aim is to improve the lives of disadvantaged people by helping other charities provide services, therapies and resources. Its objects cover people with mental or physical illness, disadvantaged individuals and social inclusion. Applying takes two stages: an email enquiry, then a full application by invitation, both scored and decided at quarterly trustee meetings. Smaller organisations, smaller projects and local grassroots groups score higher. No grant sizes are published.

Who can apply
- Voluntary, community or charity organisations, schools, churches and health bodies that deliver projects in the communities of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (the How to Apply page asks applicants to check both of these before enquiring)
- Before deciding, Sunrise looks up the organisation on the Charity Commission website and its own website, and reviews three years of published annual reports and accounts for income, expenditure and reserves
- Trustees also weigh reputation, track record, facilities, structure, governance and systems for monitoring the money
- The scoring favours strong evidence of need, wide involvement, measurable outcomes for end beneficiaries, organisations with smaller incomes, smaller projects, and grassroots groups in the Bristol/South West region that Sunrise can easily visit
- Multi-year grants are offered only to some existing beneficiaries
What it funds
Projects that further the Foundation's objects:
- To assist in the treatment and care of persons suffering from mental or physical illness of any description or in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness by the provision of therapy, education, advice, guidance, facilities for work and recreational activities
- To improve quality of life of disadvantaged individuals by providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities, and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals
- To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by addressing the needs of those people who are socially excluded, assisting them to integrate into society, by way of grants, equipment, education and services to such people and/or to charities or other organisations supporting such people
What it will not fund
- Contributions to general appeals or circulars
- Religious activity which is not for wider public benefit
- Public bodies to carry out their statutory obligations
- Activities which solely support animal welfare
- Activities which have already taken place
- Grant making by other organisations
- Privately owned and profit-distributing companies or limited partnerships
