Who can apply

  • Charities providing services or facilities to people in need, hardship or distress in the City of Birmingham
  • Charities registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales are eligible, as are charities not required to register; non-charitable organisations are not
  • National charities may apply, but the grant must be solely for the use and benefit of people living in the City of Birmingham, and the onus is on the applicant to show this
  • The Charity publishes an area-of-benefit map of the city boundary
  • One grant per organisation per calendar year; organisations can apply each year

What it funds

Projects by organisations providing services or facilities to those in need, hardship or distress in the City of Birmingham, including organisations focusing on:

  • Sick and disabled children
  • Holidays and play schemes for children
  • Clubs and associations for young people
  • Sick and disabled adults and care for the elderly
  • Addressing social problems
  • Community centres and neighbourhood groups

the 2019 application form asks applicants to tick which of four priorities their project addresses: Connecting People; Environment & Sustainability; Healthier Lives; Opportunity through Education and Learning. New or existing projects can be funded; for an existing project, trustees want to know where its funding came from before.

What it will not fund

  • Direct personal hardship grants to individuals
  • Salary costs
  • Applications by non-charitable organisations
  • More than one grant to an organisation in a calendar year

How to apply

  1. Check your organisation meets the eligibility criteria
  2. Download and complete the General Grants application form (Word), covering your charity, the project and the priority it addresses, need, delivery, outcomes, a project budget, your charity's finances and two referees
  3. Email it with your most recent accounts and annual report to GeorgeFentham@vwv.co.uk (post is also accepted)
  4. Trustees consider general grants at meetings in January, April, July and October; the deadline is the last day of the month before each meeting

you normally hear 1-2 weeks after the trustees meet. There is no appeals process. A progress report form is used after a grant.

Have ready

  • Completed General Grants application form
  • Most recent set of accounts and annual report
  • Details of two referees (preferably previous funders) who have agreed to be approached

the form asks for a simple project budget broken down by staff, direct, volunteer, site and core costs, plus income and expenditure analysis from your last accounts.
