The Harold and Alice Bridges Charity
The Harold and Alice Bridges Charity grants
A grant-making trust, administered by solicitors in Lytham and set up in 1963 by road haulier Harold Bridges and his wife Alice, that makes mainly capital grants to charitable organisations and village halls in Lancashire and South Cumbria, particularly north of the River Ribble, east towards Blackburn and into South Lakes. Trustees favour projects showing self-help and local support, such as a village hall re-roofing rather than running costs. Applications are on a one-page paper form posted to the charity's solicitors, with cut-offs of 15 January, 15 May and 15 September each year; the charity gives about £150,000 a year in mostly small grants.

Who can apply
- Charitable organisations and village halls whose area of benefit is in Lancashire (including Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen) and South Cumbria, particularly the area north of the River Ribble, eastwards towards the Blackburn area and into South Lakes
- It is helpful, but not stated as essential, for the applicant to be a charity registered with the Charity Commission; the form asks whether you are and for your charity number, and for any organisation you are affiliated to (such as a local authority)
- The funder's wording is that the area of benefit 'should, if possible' be shown to be in Lancashire and South Cumbria
What it funds
Grants for charitable purposes, mainly capital projects, including:
- Capital projects for charitable organisations
- Village halls, for example re-roofing the building
Grants are mainly for capital projects and not usually for running expenses. Trustees favour applications showing a good degree of self-help and local support.
What it will not fund
Running expenses, usually (for example paying for a hall to be regularly cleaned)
How to apply
- Download and print the one-page Application Form from the How to Apply page
- Complete it: whether you are a registered charity and your number, your organisation's name, address and website, any affiliated organisation, exactly what the grant is for and your own fundraising, and the project's total cost, money already raised, other expected grants and fundraising, and the net amount still needed
- Post it to The Harold and Alice Bridges Charity, Vincents Solicitors, 21-23 Park Street, Lytham, Lancashire FY8 5LU, to arrive by the next cut-off: 15 January, 15 May or 15 September
- Trustees consider batches of applications at their meetings three times a year
- If successful, you receive a cheque and confirm safe receipt and that the grant will be used for the stated purpose
Keep answers to the spaces on the form and do not attach anything; trustees will ask if they need more. Questions can be sent via the enquiry form on the website (no email address is published).
