The Harris Charity

The Harris Charity Grants

Grants from a Preston charity, founded from the sale of the Harris Orphanage, for young people under 25 who live in Lancashire, with special priority for Preston. Individuals can apply for things such as specialist study equipment, vocational training, essential furniture in exceptional circumstances or overseas service projects, and charitable groups and organisations can apply for projects that benefit under-25s. Trustees decide twice a year, with deadlines of 31 March and 30 September, on a downloadable paper or Word form.

Who can apply

  • Individuals under 25 with a permanent residence in Lancashire, and charitable groups and organisations working for the benefit of under-25s there
  • The area is Lancashire as defined by the Local Government Act 1972 (the county as it has been since 1974), with special priority for Preston District
  • Group applicants give their Charity Commission number if registered, or say if they are an excepted charity; groups that belong to national organisations such as Scouts, Guides or cadet forces give contact details for their district or county commissioner
  • National charities are considered only with a direct link to a local beneficiary or organisation, and a national charity part-funding something should let the individual or local organisation apply
  • Individual applicants may be asked for references from a responsible referee such as a faith leader or employer and must complete a financial information sheet

What it funds

Help for persons under 25 with a permanent residence in the county:

  • Relieving the need, hardship or distress of such persons
  • Promoting their education, including social and physical training
  • Financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments, equipment or books to help them prepare for or enter a profession, trade or calling on leaving school, university or other educational establishment
  • Apprenticing them to a profession, trade or calling
  • Facilities for recreation or other leisure-time occupation in the interests of social welfare
  • Grants or donations to charitable institutions or organisations whose object is the benefit of such persons

Examples the charity has supported for individuals include specialist study equipment or books, a repayable grant for a musical instrument, travel (only in exceptional circumstances), special support for those with particular needs, essential furniture or white goods in exceptional circumstances, expenses for overseas 'service' projects, and vocational course training or personal development.

What it will not fund

  • Financing courses, including university (or similar) tuition fees and student loans
  • Supplementing living expenses, including rent, gym membership and telephone costs
  • Salary costs
  • General grants to groups travelling overseas
  • Expenditure incurred before grant approval
  • Loans
  • Direct relief of rates, taxes or other public funds
  • National charities, unless there is a direct link to a local beneficiary or organisation
  • Applications from charities supporting individuals that cannot provide evidence (such as postcodes) that beneficiaries live in the qualifying area

  1. Read the Application Guidelines and FAQs on the charity's website

  4. Email it, or post it to The Secretary, The Harris Charity, c/o MHA, Richard House, 9 Winckley Square, Preston PR1 3HP, by 31 March or 30 September
  5. Trustees consider applications and notify successful applicants in July (March deadline) or January (September deadline)

Applications can be sent at any time but are considered against the next half-yearly deadline. Trustees may require a full report back on how the grant was spent.
