Shropshire Historic Churches Trust

Shropshire Historic Churches Trust Grants

Grants from the Shropshire Historic Churches Trust for the preservation, repair, renovation and improvement of churches, chapels and meeting houses in the Archdeaconries of Salop and Ludlow, and of their contents. Most grants are for fabric repairs (roofs, gutters, down-pipes, drains, stone, brick, slate and wood), but the Trust also helps make churches more welcoming and accessible, for example with lighting, heating, ramps, kitchens and toilets. The maximum grant is £10,000; grants over the last three years averaged about £4,285. Trustees meet four times a year.

Who can apply

  • Churches, chapels and meeting houses in the Archdeaconries of Salop and Ludlow (Shropshire) that are listed buildings or of historical or architectural interest, are used for Christian worship or ceremonies and are likely to remain so, and have insufficient funds to carry out the repairs
  • The church must be a member of the Trust; a non-member's application is only considered if accompanied by a completed membership form, and a church awarded a grant must remain a subscribing member for at least 5 years
  • The Trust expects work to be supervised by a qualified architect or conservation accredited building surveyor

What it funds

  • The preservation, repair, renovation and improvement of churches, chapels and meeting houses, and of their contents
  • Repairs to the fabric: stone, brick, slate and wood, including leaking roofs, defective gutters, down-pipes and drains
  • Making churches more welcoming and accessible, including lighting, heating, access ramps and paths, notice boards, kitchens and toilets

What it will not fund

  • Work that has started before the Trustees have considered the application (other than in exceptional circumstances)
  • Churches or chapels with sufficient funds to carry out the repairs
  • Buildings outside the Archdeaconries of Salop and Ludlow
  • Buildings that are not listed or of historical or architectural interest, or not used for Christian worship or ceremonies

How to apply

  1. Download the application form (updated March 2026) from the Grants page and read the notes at the front, which form part of the application
  2. Complete the form (church details, quinquennial inspection findings, the work needed, any faculty or permissions, costs, reserves, other funding and fundraising)
  3. Email the completed form with your accounts to the Grants Administrator, John Whiteside, at c.whiteside.whiteside@btinternet.com by the 15th of March, June, September or December
  4. Trustees consider applications at their quarterly meeting; if a grant is offered, it is paid when repair work up to the amount of the grant is completed and an invoice or architect's certificate is presented

Applications received after a cut-off may be considered at a subsequent meeting. Grant offers are valid for up to three years. You can discuss an application with John Whiteside on 01743 791147.
