British Motor Sports Training Trust (British Motorsport Trust)
Safety Development Fund
The British Motorsport Trust's Safety Development Fund gives grants to Motorsport UK Registered Clubs and other Motorsport UK Registered or Licensed organisations for additional or enhanced safety improvements that comply with Motorsport UK requirements. It covers four main strands: closed road event safety, venue safety and sustainability, rescue units and equipment, and recovery units and equipment. Applications are considered in batches about every four weeks; around 60 grants are approved in a typical year.

- The application should be properly authorised by the club or organisation (for example by a committee decision)
What it funds
Additional or enhanced safety improvements which comply with Motorsport UK requirements or regulations, including but not limited to:
- Closed Road Event Safety Grants: spectator safety and control equipment and statutory safety signage for clubs running closed road rally or speed events anywhere in the UK (up to £600 per club per year, no more than 75% of costs, in the first year; up to £300 in the second year run by the same club)
- Safety management radios and fire extinguishers to improve rally safety
- Venue Safety and Sustainability Improvements at fixed and temporary venues, including noise management projects, where they help ensure continued or extended use of a venue (track or course works are normally eligible)
- Rescue Units and Equipment: replacement or renewal of Motorsport UK Licensed Rescue Units and their Motorsport UK specified equipment, on a sliding scale of percentages
- Recovery Units and Equipment: replacement or renewal of Motorsport UK Licensed Recovery Units and their Motorsport UK specified equipment, on a sliding scale of percentages
What it will not fund
- Buildings and infrastructure at venues (generally not eligible)
- Normal service and maintenance of rescue or recovery units
- Commercial activity by recovery units that is outside the Trust's remit
- Specialist equipment not currently specified in Motorsport UK Regulations for that type of organisation
- Volunteer and marshal training (now funded through the Motorsport UK Growth Grant Scheme, not this fund)
How to apply
- Read the FAQs on the Grants page, which list typical examples of eligible projects
- Complete the Safety Development Fund application form online (Cognito form linked from the Grants page), or download the PDF form
- Give as much detail as possible: the project's aims and benefits, total cost, how costs will be met, other funding sought and contributions in kind
- Return the completed form by email to the Trust administration team (admin@britishmotorsporttrust.org)
- The Awards Panel considers applications in batches about every four weeks and sets award levels using the Trustees' internal guidelines
Volunteer and marshal training is no longer funded here; apply to the Motorsport UK Growth Grant Scheme or contact training@motorsportuk.org.
Have ready
- Completed Safety Development Fund application form
- Copies of paid invoices if purchases have already been made, or a quotation if the purchase is still pending
- For venue improvements: images or sketch plans and any Motorsport UK Safety Directorate inspection comments (helpful)
Where venue use is governed by a lease or agreement with the landowner, the Trust may ask to see it and as a minimum needs the signatories, its remaining validity and its review or termination date.
