Manchester District Nursing Institution Fund: grants for people in medical need

Grants, generally up to £500, for people on a low income in Manchester, Salford or Trafford who are sick, convalescent or disabled, for a specific item or help that gives medical relief and eases their suffering or helps their recovery. People cannot apply themselves: a health or social care worker, charity professional or support worker working directly with them applies on their behalf. Trustees meet monthly, with applications due by the 15th (11th in December).

Who can apply

  • People living in the Manchester, Salford or Trafford council areas who are on a low income, in financial need, and have a medical condition (sick, convalescent or disabled) or are recovering from one that affects their ability to provide the items requested for themselves
  • They must have legal status to live in the UK (or show it is in process) and must not have had a grant from the charity in the last 12 months
  • Individuals cannot apply themselves: the application must be made by a professional working directly with them, such as a social worker, health visitor or other worker from a statutory or voluntary organisation, who is expected to have considered other sources of help and to use the award as part of a plan to improve the person's situation

What it funds

  • A specific need that helps to alleviate the person's suffering and provides medical relief of some kind; trustees are flexible in what they award for
  • Specific items, for example a household item, essential clothing or equipment, or help towards furnishings for a new or existing tenancy

requests above £500 may be considered in special circumstances or where match funding has been secured elsewhere, but should not be expected

What it will not fund

  • Requests for cash
  • Rates, council tax, taxes, fines or other payments to public funds
  • Utility bills, such as electricity and gas
  • Mortgage costs
  • Funeral costs or memorials
  • General everyday household costs such as heating, lighting or rates
  • Items for a residence other than where the person lives
  • Flooring (currently paused)
  • The same item to an applicant more than once (not generally)
  • Residents outside Manchester, Salford and Trafford
  • Retrospective payments

How to apply

  1. The referring professional reads the Individual Applicant Guidelines and checks the person lives in Manchester, Salford or Trafford (the FAQ asks for the GOV.UK local council checker to be used on the full postcode)
  2. The professional completes every section of the online grant application form, including all household members, monthly household income and expenditure with totals and an explanation of any surplus or deficit, debts, other applications made, and a report on background, current circumstances, help requested, its impact and wider support
  3. Attach any supplementary report sheets and written quotes for unusual or specific items, then sign and submit
  4. Submit by the 15th of the month (11th in December) for the trustees' meeting on the last Friday of the month (no meeting in December)
  5. If successful, payment is made by cheque to the supplier of the goods, never to the person or the referring organisation; the referrer must ensure the grant is used as agreed and provide receipts if asked

applications made by individuals or families themselves are not considered. An application to one of the charity's three funds counts as an application to all three

incomplete forms are returned or rejected, and the trustees cannot chase missing information

Have ready

  • Completed and signed online grant application form, including the household finance section
  • Written quotes for any unusual or specific requests (trustees have preferred suppliers for general items)
  • Supplementary report sheets (optional)

the applicant gives explicit consent on the form to the processing of health information
