The Hampstead Church Music Trust

Hampstead Church Music Trust grants

Grants for the performance, training or education in church music, principally in the Anglican choral tradition, by churches and organisations in the area of the former Metropolitan Borough of Hampstead, with priority for Hampstead Parish Church. Individual grants are unlikely to exceed £5,000; a project 'kick-started' over about three years, such as part of a new Director of Music's salary, can receive up to £10,000 in total. Smaller requests are more likely to succeed, and applications should arrive at least six months before the money is needed.

Who can apply

  • Churches and other organisations within the Hampstead area, defined in the Trust Deed as the area of the Metropolitan Borough of Hampstead as it existed before the London Government Act 1963 (now part of the London Borough of Camden; a map is on the website)
  • The Deed says the object is to be fulfilled in particular in Hampstead Parish Church, and priority is given to music within the Anglican choral tradition
  • Performances or projects must strive for high quality and must reach out to congregations and/or the local community, aiming to attract reasonable audiences
  • Where an application is part of a larger fundraising campaign, the Trustees need evidence of applications to, and confirmed support from, other sources, and of the applicant's ability to provide matched funding from its own resources
  • All grants are at the absolute discretion of the Trustees

What it funds

Performance, training or education in connection with any of the following:

  • Liturgical settings of the Daily Office and/or the Mass, or settings of a sacred text (which may be drawn from the Bible or sacred poetry)
  • The Anglican repertoire, drawing not only on vernacular English settings from the 16th century to the present day, but also on pre- and post-Reformation Catholic church music, other European Protestant traditions (notably Lutheran) and both Western and Eastern influences
  • Choral music with or without accompaniment, most often provided by an organ, and/or by other appropriate instruments
  • Primarily choral music, but occasionally music for solo organ or instrument(s) within the setting of Anglican worship
  • A one-off grant to support an event (for example a service or concert for a particular occasion) or purpose (for example repairs to an organ)
  • Kick-starting a project over a period of (say) three years, for example contributing to the salary of a new Director of Music where the post does not currently exist

the definitions do not preclude the performance of a Mass or Requiem Mass, motet, sacred oratorio or Passion with solo items and/or orchestral accompaniment

What it will not fund

  • Applications without an appropriate connection to the Hampstead area
  • Applications that do not meet the requirements of the Trust Deed
  • Grants above £10,000 in total for a multi-year kick-start project

How to apply

  1. Check the project meets the Trust Deed and has an appropriate connection to the Hampstead area (see the area map)
  2. Complete the Grant Application Form: applicant and contact, the event (date, time, place) or project, amount requested, reason, outline costings, and other funding applied for and its results
  3. Send it, at least six months before the grant is required, to The Hon Treasurer, The Hampstead Church Music Trust, c/o Hampstead Parish Church, Church Row, London NW3 6UU, or by email to hcmt@hampsteadparishchurch.org.uk
  4. If awarded, report back on the form provided within six weeks of the end of the event or project, covering its success, publicity, audience attendance and so on

if the project does not go ahead for any reason after payment, the grant must be returned in full

Have ready

  • Completed Grant Application Form
  • Breakdown costings (required for all applications)
  • Evidence of applications to and confirmed support from other sources, and of your own matched funding, where the application is part of a larger fundraising campaign

an end-of-grant report on the Trust's report form is due within six weeks of the event or project ending
