Edith Murphy Foundation (administered by Ludlow Trust Company)
Edith Murphy Foundation grants
General grants from a Leicester-founded family foundation to organisations (mainly registered charities) that carry out research, support people in need because of age, youth, illness, disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances, or care for unwanted animals. Grants are normally £500 to £5,000, occasionally larger. The trustees are not geographically restricted but in practice concentrate on national charities and local causes in Leicestershire and the East Midlands. Registered charities apply through Ludlow Trust Company's online Funding Enquiry Gateway; trustees meet four times a year.

Who can apply
- Organisations, predominantly (but not exclusively) registered charities
- Non-registered organisations can also receive grants: they apply by email and must complete a form clarifying the organisation's tax residency, and may be asked for further documents depending on their structure
- No geographic restriction in the trust's powers, but because of demand the trustees concentrate on national charities and on local causes in Leicestershire and the East Midlands, so organisations elsewhere working only locally are unlikely to succeed
- No individuals
What it funds
Grants to organisations that:
- Carry out research (historically including medical research such as diabetes and kidney disease)
- Support individuals who, by reason of their age, youth, infirmity, disablement, poverty or social and economic circumstances, are suffering hardship or distress or are otherwise in need
- Relieve the suffering of and care for unwanted animals
Applications should explain the purpose of the grant, how it will be used, who will benefit and a breakdown of costs.
The Charity Commission register lists the foundation's purposes broadly (education, health, disability, poverty relief, arts/culture/heritage/science, amateur sport, animals, environment).

Applications from individuals
How to apply
- Registered charities: register your charity on Ludlow Trust Company's Funding Enquiry Gateway (funding.ludlowtrust.com) and submit a specific application to the Edith Murphy Foundation using its charity number 1026062
- Organisations that are not registered with the Charity Commission: email the same information to charitabletrusts@ludlowtrust.com
- Include the charity name and registration number, an executive summary at the start stating the purpose of the grant and the total requested, detail of how the grant will be used, who will benefit, the amount requested with a cost breakdown, and other fundraising and the amount raised to date
- Trustees consider applications at their quarterly meetings
Ludlow only contacts successful applicants and does not give feedback; submitted Gateway applications cannot be edited (delete and resubmit instead).
Non-registered organisations will also be asked to complete a tax residency form and may need to provide further documentation.
Have ready
- Written application covering the charity name and number, an executive summary, how the grant will be used, beneficiaries, the amount requested with a breakdown of costs, and other fundraising to date
Non-registered organisations must also complete a tax residency form, and further documentation may be requested depending on the organisation's structure.
