Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (UK Government)

Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for residential landlords

UK government grant covering 75% of the cost of buying and installing electric vehicle chargepoints at residential rental properties, up to £500 per socket and up to 200 sockets a year per applicant (or per group of organisations under common control). It is for residential landlords, but a charity that owns or manages residential property, a registered social housing provider or a residents' management company can apply, as long as it is registered at Companies House or VAT registered. The chargepoint must be installed by an OZEV-authorised installer, who claims the grant after installation; funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027.

Who can apply

  • Residential landlords who own or manage let flats, houses or apartment blocks (or their communal areas) in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland
  • Eligible applicants include private landlords, right to manage and residents' management companies, freeholders of multi-unit properties, registered social housing providers, public sector bodies, property management companies acting for a landlord, property factors in Scotland, and charities that own or manage residential property
  • The applicant must be registered at Companies House or VAT registered (so an unincorporated charity or CIO would need a VAT number)
  • The grant only helps organisations that let residential property with private off-street parking; it does not cover a charity's own premises or car park
  • Groups under common control share one 200-socket annual limit

What it funds

  • 75% of the cost of buying and installing an eligible residential electric vehicle chargepoint, up to £500 per socket, at existing residential properties that are let (flats, houses, apartment blocks, and the communal areas of multi-unit properties)

Each parking space must be off-street, private, clearly defined and owned by the applicant or one they have legal rights to.

Grants for up to 200 sockets per year, across one or several properties.

The chargepoint model must be on the eligible list and the installer OZEV-authorised.

What it will not fund

  • Properties the applicant lives in
  • Non-residential properties
  • Chargepoints already installed before OZEV confirms eligibility
  • Properties used only for holiday accommodation
  • Buildings under construction or new builds
  • Installations that are a mandatory requirement, such as Building Regulations Part S or a planning condition
  • Properties in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
  • Applicants without a Companies House registration number or VAT registration number

How to apply

  1. Before applying: complete any needed upgrades to the building's electrical supply, arrange maintenance checks, decide how electricity and running costs will be paid, ensure chargepoints are accessible, and update the property's fire risk assessment
  2. Contact an OZEV-authorised installer to get a quote and agree the work
  3. Choose a chargepoint model from the government's list of eligible chargepoints
  4. Complete the online application on Find a Grant (one application per address and per installer), uploading the supporting evidence
  5. Wait for OZEV approval (OZEV may audit the application or visit the site) before any installation
  6. After installation, the installer claims the grant from OZEV with photographs and the invoice, and OZEV pays the installer

Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027; the government may end or change the scheme, aiming to give 4 weeks' notice.

Have ready

  • Quote from an OZEV-authorised installer
  • HM Land Registry title register showing you are the freeholder (freeholders of multi-unit properties)
  • Dated copy of current insurance policy showing the property address and that it is a rental property (private landlords and charities letting a property)
  • Evidence of Companies House listing and a document verifying your position, such as minutes of appointment (right to manage or residents' management companies)
  • Letter of appointment or agreement with the landlord, plus the evidence for that landlord type (property management companies)

Documents must be in the name of the organisation or business applying.
