The Elmley Foundation

The Elmley Foundation Main Programme

An arts funder for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, promoting the appreciation, knowledge and study of the arts and artistic achievement in all their forms in the two counties. It rarely makes grants over £2,000 to an application it was not expecting — larger awards follow detailed discussion beforehand. It funds organisations, individual artists and exceptionally talented students, and will act as a matching partner in bids to Arts Council England and lottery funds.

Who can apply

  • Organisations and groups which operate under a formal constitution and have a bank account controlled by the managing board or committee
  • Individual artists from Herefordshire and Worcestershire, or artists elsewhere working with a partner organisation in those counties to make work publicly available
  • Students born and schooled in Herefordshire or Worcestershire who demonstrate exceptional talent, typically at postgraduate level, though undergraduate specialist training and exceptional opportunities such as the National Youth Orchestra are sometimes considered
  • Applications from organisations must involve professional artists in work benefiting people in the two counties
  • The Foundation generally expects to see revenue receipts and other grant or sponsorship income in a financing package that balances

What it funds

  • Backing festivals, societies and companies in their promotions and developments, and start-up finance for mounting arts events
  • Commissioning art or craft works for particular locations or performances
  • Helping talented young people get the training they need
  • Sponsoring lectures, seminars or conferences that develop thinking and practice in the arts and their presentation to the public
  • All associated expenses are considered, including core administrative costs
  • The Foundation will make commitments or expressions of interest to help applicants raise money elsewhere, and collaborates with local authorities, businesses and arts development agencies

What it will not fund

  • Non-arts projects
  • Projects which do not involve professional artists
  • Arts events outside Herefordshire or Worcestershire
  • Arts events intended to raise funds for non-arts causes
  • General appeals
  • Retrospective applications — bids to support work the applicant is already committed to, or which has already started or been completed

How to apply

  • Send a letter explaining what the money is needed for, with an estimate of income and expenditure for the project and details of who will benefit
  • An application form can be downloaded and used but is not required, though the Foundation recommends looking at it to see what to include
  • Anyone applying for the first time for more than £2,000 should send a short email describing the project and the amount first
  • The Foundation strongly advises contacting it before making a formal application
  • Post to West Aish, Morchard Bishop, Crediton, Devon EX17 6RX or email

Have ready

A letter setting out the project and an estimate of income and expenditure; optionally the Foundation's application form.
