Who can apply

  • People who live in Islington and are in financial crisis
  • For a crisis payment you must be on a low income (usually getting or able to get income-based benefits), without enough savings to meet daily needs, and have had a financial shock in the last 8 weeks - such as losing your job or a drop in benefits, leaving home because of domestic abuse, a flood, fire or other disaster, a death or accident in the family, a health or mental health emergency, needing to repair or replace an essential item like a bed or cooker, or moving costs
  • For a housing payment you must get Housing Benefit or the housing part of Universal Credit and be struggling with rent because of the bedroom tax, Benefit Cap or Local Housing Allowance, or need help with a deposit or removal costs
  • In most cases you will only get one payment in 12 months

What it funds

  • Crisis payments: one payment for urgent help to pay for essentials - food, electricity and clothing
  • Housing payments: rent, if your benefits do not cover your rent because of bedroom tax, Benefit Cap or Local Housing Allowance
  • Housing payments: rent deposits
  • Housing payments: removal or moving costs
  • Support for the future: debt advice, help to claim benefits, help with skills and finding work, and energy advice

  3. Contact Access Islington: phone 020 7527 8222, email heretohelp@islington.gov.uk, or visit an Access Islington Hub

  5. If approved, choose payment into your bank account or by letter to cash at the Post Office; household items or removals may be bought or booked for you
