Who can apply

  • Businesses and non-profit organisations based in Islington with fewer than 50 employees and a turnover of less than £10 million
  • The grant must be used for the organisation's premises (building); you cannot apply if you run your business from home

What it funds

  • Up to £750 for improvements such as upgrading smaller electrical equipment, expected to save less than 1 tonne of carbon per year
  • Up to £1,500 for improvements such as upgrading lighting to LEDs, upgrading larger electrical equipment, improving glazing or installing external shading
  • Up to £2,500 to install an air source heat pump

What it will not fund

  • Businesses run from home
  • Work necessary to meet legal requirements
  • Maintenance of anything installed (the organisation must fund this)

How to apply

  1. Apply online through the council's Energising Small Business grant form, saying what you will spend the funding on, any additional environmental benefits, and what you already do to reduce energy
  2. The council visits your business to discuss the project and calculate the savings it will make, then decides whether to award the grant
  3. If successful, provide 2 quotes for the work; the council weighs the cost of each quote against the expected energy savings to set the amount
  4. Spend the funds within 6 months and send copies of the relevant invoices
  5. Complete a survey 12 months after receiving the grant

you must repay the money if you do not carry out the works or do not provide invoices within 6 months, and repay any unused funding if the work costs less than expected.

Have ready

  • 2 quotes for the planned work (after the council's decision)
  • Copies of invoices for the work (within 6 months of payment)
