Hackney Council
Disabled Facilities Grant (Hackney)
The statutory Disabled Facilities Grant from Hackney Council: up to £30,000 towards essential home adaptations that an occupational therapist recommends, such as stairlifts, wet rooms and ramps. Open to disabled residents who own their home or rent privately or from a housing association. Hackney does not means test adaptations costing under £20,000, and does not means test anyone aged 19 or under. A top-up of up to £10,000 may be available where works cost more than £30,000.

- The home must be owned by you or someone you live with, or rented from a private landlord (who must give written permission or apply for you) or a housing association (which can also apply for you)
- You must live in the home for 5 years after the work
- Adaptations costing under £20,000 are not means tested; above that, people on Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based ESA or JSA, Guarantee Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or (on low income) tax credits pay nothing, and others take a means test
- No means test applies for anyone aged 19 or under
- Council tenants also start with an occupational therapy assessment and pay nothing towards adaptations
- Owner-occupiers who receive more than £5,000 and sell within 10 years may have to repay up to £10,000
What it funds
Home adaptations that your occupational therapist recommends, which can include:
- Through-floor lifts
- Stair lifts
- Ceiling track hoists
- Wet rooms (also known as 'wet floor showers')
- Specialised toilets
- Wider doors for wheelchair access
- External ramps
if the work costs more than £30,000, a top-up grant of up to £10,000 may be available, depending on income, savings and benefits.
What it will not fund
- Work started before the grant is approved
- Adaptations to a home that is not your main or only home
- Labour costs charged by contractors who are members of the disabled person's family (materials only)
- Labour on do-it-yourself works (materials only)
How to apply
- Request an occupational therapy assessment using the 'Request adult social care support' form (select 'occupational therapy' and describe the adaptations you need) or by calling 020 8356 6262; under-19s contact Hackney Ark on 020 7014 7025
- Have your needs assessed by an occupational therapist
- Complete the means test if your adaptations cost more than £20,000 and you do not get a qualifying benefit
- Wait for the approval letter before any work begins
- Have the works done within 12 months of approval, by a contractor the council arranges or one you find yourself
you can estimate your contribution with the council's online self-assessment estimation tool.
Have ready
- Details of your health and mobility needs and daily activities (for the assessment request)
if a means test is needed, the council asks about your income, savings and investments, and benefits; private tenants need written landlord permission.
