The maximum is £15,000, the average about £7,500, and first grants are rarely more than £5,000. The current round closes at 5pm on 11 January 2027, with offers expected in the week beginning 22 February. The charity asks every applicant to have a call with its grants team before applying.

Who can apply

  • Not-for-profit organisations working with people in need who live in the former metropolitan borough of Hammersmith: the Hammersmith & Fulham wards of Addison, Avonmore, Brook Green, College Park & Old Oak, Coningham, Grove, Hammersmith Broadway, Ravenscourt, Shepherd's Bush Green, Wendell Park, White City and Wormholt
  • You need not be based there, but must reach its residents; for wider projects only the share benefiting them is funded
  • Smaller local organisations with strong links to their beneficiaries are preferred
  • You do not need to be a registered charity: charitable companies and CIOs need at least 3 unrelated trustees; unincorporated associations need a constitution stating the community benefit, a committee of at least 3 unrelated members and income and expenditure accounts (and must register as a charity if their activities are charitable and income is over £5,000); CICs must already be registered, with at least 3 unrelated directors and detailed accounts
  • All need an organisation bank account with two unrelated signatories
  • Schools in the area can apply for work outside the normal curriculum that benefits disadvantaged children
  • Unconstituted groups may sometimes be funded but must talk to HUC first
  • Only one HUC grant can be held at a time and only one approved every 12 months; funding is unlikely beyond three consecutive years

What it funds

Work supporting one of the trustees' priority areas:

  • Work with families and children: the needs of very young children, support for parents and parenting, education and development of children including play, creativity and non-traditional learning, key transition points, and work with vulnerable young people
  • Meeting basic needs: access to food, shelter, warmth, advice and support
  • Countering isolation, in any group and for any reason, such as people with disabilities, people who don't speak English, women experiencing domestic violence, older people and carers
  • Building confident individuals and communities: building confidence, bringing people together, volunteering, peer mentoring, advocacy, support for community groups and some forms of employment support

projects can be one-off or ongoing, and core costs are funded where there are clear benefits to people living in the area of benefit.

What it will not fund

  • Anything which promotes religion or a specific political cause
  • Anything which only helps people who do not live in the area of benefit
  • Anything primarily for the benefit of animals or the environment rather than people
  • Anything benefiting people who are not experiencing 'need' of some kind
  • Companies limited by guarantee or by shares that are not registered as a charity or CIC
  • Grants for longer than a year in the first instance

where reserves seem above a prudent level, or the applicant could fund some of the work itself, an otherwise strong application may be declined.

How to apply

  1. Read the Community Grants Guidelines
  2. Complete the eligibility quiz
  3. Email Paul and Paige at grants@hamunitedcharities.com to arrange a call, even if HUC has funded you before
  4. Complete the online application form (opened through the eligibility checklist) by 5pm on 11 January 2027

a Word version of the form is available on request for planning, but all applications must be submitted online. The next round after January 2027 is expected in July 2027, with a closing date in June to be confirmed.
