Burnley Borough Council

Emergency Works Grant

A quick grant from Burnley Borough Council to remove a serious, imminent danger in the home of an owner-occupier aged 60 or over, or disabled, who gets income-related benefits. It covers repairs to Category 1 hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, such as leaking roofs, dangerous electrics, heating and serious damp, not general improvements. It is means tested and normally capped at £10,000, rising to £15,000 for essential major works.

Who can apply

  • Owner-occupiers (including Park Home owners) living in the borough of Burnley who receive income-related benefits and are aged 60 or over, or are disabled
  • The property must be their only residence
  • Private tenants are usually not eligible, because the landlord is expected to do such repairs; housing association tenants are not eligible
  • All applicants are means tested to decide what, if anything, they contribute

What it funds

Repairs to Category 1 hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System that pose an imminent threat to the occupants, for example:

  • Repairing leaking roofs
  • Repairing/replacing dangerous electrics
  • Repairing/replacing or installing a central heating system
  • Addressing significant damp or dry rot

What it will not fund

Larger scale home improvements (the grant removes a danger before more significant improvement works are carried out)

How to apply

  1. Complete the council's enquiry form with the Housing & Development Control Unit
  2. A grants officer visits your home to decide whether the work is eligible and what the grant will include
