The Talisman Charitable Trust

Talisman Charitable Trust grants

Relief-in-need grants for people in the UK of small means who are 'going short', made only through an organisation that knows their circumstances — a local authority, Citizens Advice or another charity. Grants can cover education, health, housing, disablement or disability, and are usually paid to the supporting organisation. Applications are by post at any time; the trust replies only if it makes a grant, usually within four weeks.

Who can apply

  • Individuals in the UK of small means whom the trustees consider deserving and who may be described as 'going short', applied for on their behalf by a local authority, Citizens Advice or another charitable or non-profit organisation aware of their circumstances
  • Applicants are expected to have investigated state benefits (the trust would like applicants first to have considered government funding such as the Hardship Fund where available) first; people already receiving their full entitlement may still qualify

What it funds

Relief of poverty for individuals of small means, including grants for:

  • Education
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Disablement or disability

from time to time the trust also assists other charities with similar objectives.

What it will not fund

  • Funds that would replace any state benefit
  • Applications made directly by individuals
  • Applications sent by recorded delivery or 'signed for' services

How to apply

  1. The supporting organisation writes on letter-headed paper with the details below
  2. Enclose the trust's consent form signed or ticked by the client and mark the envelope 'CONSENT' — or fully anonymise all client data and mark it 'ANON'
  3. Post it to The Talisman Charitable Trust, Basement Office, 354 Kennington Road, London SE11 4LD

the trust only responds if it decides to award a grant; if you have not heard within 4 weeks the application was unsuccessful.

do not send original documents — they are destroyed, not returned. The trust does not generally discuss applications by phone.

Have ready

  • Signed or ticked consent form (or fully anonymised application)
  • The full name and address of the beneficiary
  • An idea of their financial circumstances
  • A brief history of the case
  • An explanation of what is needed and the extent to which poverty is involved
  • An estimate of the funds required and payee details (the trust usually prefers to pay the supporting organisation)
  • A list of other charities approached
  • Optional: supporting medical documentation, quotes for building work, school documentation for educational needs, and details of other assistance received
