What it funds

Works to make homes friendly, help individuals live safely, manage their surroundings and be independent, which could include:

  • Making changes to lighting to improve brightness and visibility
  • Changing cupboard doors to glass ones to aid recognition of contents
  • Redecorating walls to make rooms feel calmer
  • Replacing floor coverings that cause confusion or safety issues
  • Replacing bathroom toilet seats and rails with coloured ones to improve visual perception
  • Installing signage for easier recognition
  • Making sure there is safe access to the property
  • Provision of a safe space
  • Carbon monoxide, cold and heat alarms
  • Digital assistive technology

this list is not exhaustive; each case is considered with advice from the council's occupational therapy service.

How to apply

  1. Check eligibility against the Housing Assistance Policy 2021 to 2026
  2. Gather the documents and supporting information from a professional, usually your occupational therapist
  3. Fill in the online application form, which goes to the Disabled Facilities Grant Team

the policy says applicants must be referred by the Social Care Team; if the supporting information is from a professional other than an occupational therapist, the DFG Team will consult an occupational therapist on your behalf.

Have ready

  • VAT exemption certificate (part 2 only; a family member or carer can fill it in)
  • Owner's certificate with signed owner's consent, or tenant's certificate with the landlord's contact details
  • One proof of identity (UK driving licence, passport, birth or marriage certificate) for the applicant and, if different, the disabled person
  • At least two proofs of address dated within the last 3 months (bank statement, pension letter, utility bill, Council Tax bill, benefit letter, Child Benefit or Child Tax Credit letter)
  • Supporting information from a professional, usually your occupational therapist, or their name, occupation, email and phone number
  • At least one quotation for the work
