Forest of Avon Trust

Trees for Climate

A grant for landowners and land managers in the West of England to plant trees, hedgerows, orchards and wood pasture. It is funded by the DEFRA Trees Programme. It can cover up to 100% of planting and protection costs plus up to 15 years of maintenance payments. The Forest of Avon team also does the site checks, design and paperwork. It only helps charities that own or manage land suitable for planting.

Who can apply

  • People and organisations that own or manage land in the Forest of Avon area: Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire
  • Projects in the rest of Somerset and Gloucestershire are considered case by case, and farm projects there must be larger ones
  • The funder says it works with 'all kinds of landowners', including farmers and parish councils through its Green Canopy campaign
  • Its listed past projects include Bath City Farm
  • You need land available for planting and must sign a planting agreement

What it funds

Up to 100% of the cost of trees, planting and tree protection, and in some cases basic related site infrastructure. Up to 15 years of tree maintenance payments and support. A free site suitability assessment and regulatory checks by a Woodland Officer, plus planting design and expert support. Eligible planting:

  • Woodland (no maximum size, minimum 0.1 ha per block)
  • Orchards (0.1 ha or more, about 15 fruit trees on vigorous rootstock, non-commercial)
  • Wood pasture (0.1 ha or more, at least 3 trees per 0.1 ha)
  • New hedges (minimum 100m)
  • Natural regeneration or colonisation case by case

Farm agroforestry layouts are also supported, such as silvo-arable, silvo-pastoral, riparian buffers, shelterbelts and coppice.

What it will not fund

  • Planting outside the Forest of Avon area and its halo counties
  • Orchards are for non-commercial planting only
  • Planting blocks under 0.1 ha and new hedges under 100m fall below the stated minimums

How to apply

  • Email or contact the tree team, then complete the online Registration of Interest and Consent Form, giving the grid reference or What3Words, local authority, estimated hectares, planting type and a map
  • The process then runs: site visit, joint design, planning and archaeological or EIA checks, approval of the design, signed agreement, planting, then a claim with invoices and photos followed by an inspection visit and payment

Have ready

  • Consent form with the planting area's grid reference or What3Words and a GIS file or photo of a map showing the planting area
  • Later, a claim with invoices and photos
