London Borough of Redbridge

Disabled Adaptations Grant (Redbridge)

Redbridge Council grants of up to £30,000 for disabled residents who need changes to their home, such as ramps, wider doors, grab rails, a stairlift or suitable bathroom facilities. Owners, private tenants and council tenants can all apply after an occupational therapist assessment. Grants over £19,000 are means tested, except for disabled children; where a home cannot be adapted, a Relocation Grant of up to £10,000 may be offered instead.

Who can apply

  • Redbridge residents where you or someone in your home has a disability, the changes are needed because of that disability and are possible in your home, and you will live in the home for at least five years after the work
  • It does not matter whether you own, rent privately or live in a council home
  • Grants over £19,000 need a means test; children with disabilities do not need one

What it funds

Changes to the home needed because of a disability, for example:

  • Making it easier to get in and out of the home, such as widening doors or installing ramps or grab rails
  • Making it easier to move around inside, such as with a stairlift
  • Providing suitable bathroom and toilet facilities

if the home cannot be improved, a Relocation Grant of up to £10,000 (no means test, once every 10 years) may help with moving to more suitable accommodation, moving costs, utility connection costs and lawyer or estate agent fees. It cannot be applied for directly.

What it will not fund

Work already in progress or completed (apply before starting any work)

How to apply

  1. Get an assessment from an occupational therapist: through Redbridge adult social services, or NELFT's children and young people's occupational therapy service if the grant is for someone aged 19 or under
  2. Once the assessment is complete, apply online with the Disabled Adaptations Grant form

do not start any work before applying.
