Salford City Council
Disabled Facilities Grant (Salford)
Salford City Council's Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 helps pay for adapting a home so a person with disabilities can live independently, such as better access, suitable bathroom and sleeping facilities, or usable lighting and power. Every application is means tested, and work must be recommended by an occupational therapist. Where costs exceed £30,000, a discretionary top-up grant may be awarded in hardship, or the council may offer repayment or equity loans; a relocation equity loan may help where the home cannot be adapted.

Who can apply
- Salford homeowners, housing association tenants and private tenants applying to make a property suitable for a person with disabilities
- Applications are only considered when an occupational therapist has recommended the work, and the council decides which works are necessary, appropriate, reasonable and practicable
- All applications involve a government-set means test of the disabled person and their partner, if applicable, which decides how much you contribute; it takes account of benefits, pension, savings and work income
What it funds
Examples of types of work eligible for a Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant:
- Adaptations to aid access to a property
- Providing appropriate bathroom and sleeping facilities
- Making lighting and power useable, such as repositioning light switches
- Appropriate adaptations to enable a person with disabilities to live independently or be cared for in their own home
where several options would meet your needs, the grant is based on the most cost-effective option. If it is not possible to adapt your existing home, the council may, with your agreement, contribute to the costs of a move.
What it will not fund
- Work not recommended by an occupational therapist
- Costs above the £30,000 mandatory grant limit (loans or, in hardship, a discretionary top-up grant may be available instead)
How to apply
- Arrange for an occupational therapist to visit: call 0808 504 0350 to find out more
- Once the occupational therapist has recommended the work, apply for the grant; an officer guides you through the options
- Complete the means test
