  • Only organisations that have received Open Programme funding in the past three years and/or are currently funded by John Lyon's Charity can apply to this fund
  • The building or venue must be used mainly for children and young people's activities
  • Applicants need at least a two-year lease (or equivalent) for a Small Grant or a five-year lease for a Main Grant
  • Priority goes to smaller organisations with turnover under £500,000
  • Previous Refurbishment Fund grantees must wait three years from completion before applying again
  • Schools are not eligible
  • The Charity does not fund CICs or other non-charities, universities, registered social landlords, NHS bodies, hospices or grant-makers

What it funds

One-off refurbishment costs for spaces used to deliver services to young people, indoors or outdoors.

  • This covers minor or essential building maintenance such as re-wiring, roof repairs or plumbing
  • Small refurbishments such as upgrading kitchens used for youth activities, toilets or other delivery spaces
  • Making spaces accessible to users

Work should be limited to one space in the building (e.g. the main delivery room, which may have several elements) or to one key issue (e.g. faulty wiring).

Small Grants: up to £10,000, with a total refurbishment cost of no more than £10,000.

Main Grants: up to £30,000 (average expected about £15,000), with a total project cost of no more than £100,000 including the Charity's contribution.

5% of the amount requested must be set aside as contingency.

The project should be finished within a year of the grant offer, and works should be guaranteed by contractors for at least one year.

What it will not fund

  • Purchase or renewal of equipment (e.g. air conditioning and its installation)
  • Refurbishment of non-delivery spaces such as offices
  • Retrospective grants or works that have already begun
  • New builds or larger capital projects with a total budget over £100,000
  • An extensive list of small jobs around a building
  • Schools (not eligible for this fund)

  3. Apply through the 'Click here to apply' link on the Refurbishment Fund page (Blackbaud/YourCause grants portal)
